Conceptual Design of a Collimation System for the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Patecki, Marcin (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is the last accelerator in the LHC Injectors Chain. Its performance is constantly being improved in frame of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project in order to prepare it for the future HL-LHC (High Luminosity LHC) operation. [...]

Conceptual design of an off-momentum collimation system in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron for High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider proton beams / Patecki, Marcin (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
The CERN accelerator complex is undergoing an upgrade in order to meet the requirements of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). One of the key needs is to increase the intensity of beams injected into the LHC from the current $1.15 \times 10^{11}$ to $2.3 \times 10^{11}$ $p^+ $ /bunch. [...]

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator colliding beams of protons and lead ions at energies up to 7 TeV and 2.76 TeV, respectively. ALICE is one of the detector experiments optimised for heavy-ion collisions. [...]

SPS slow extraction losses and activation: update on recent improvements / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bernhard, Johannes (CERN) ; Bertone, Caterina (CERN) ; Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Brunner, Kristóf (Wigner RCP, Budapest) et al.
Annual high intensity requests of over $1 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target (POT) from the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) Fixed Target (FT) physics program continue, with the prospect of requests for even higher, unprecedented levels in the coming decade. A concerted and multifaceted R&D; effort has been launched to understand and reduce the slow extraction induced radioactivation of the SPS and to anticipate future experimental proposals, such as SHiP [1] at the SPS Beam Dump Facility (BDF) [2], which will request an additional $4 \times 10^{19}$ POT per year. Low-Impedance Collimators for HL-LHC / Antipov, Sergey (CERN) ; Amorim, David (U. Grenoble Alpes) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Métral, Elias (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN)
The High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will double its beam intensity for the needs of High Energy Physics frontier. This increase requires a reduction of the machine's impedance to ensure the coherent stability of the beams until they are put in collision. [...]

Ground Motion Compensation using Feed-forward Control at ATF2 / Bett, Douglas (CERN) ; Charrondière, Cedric (CERN) ; Jeremie, Andrea (Annecy, LAPP) ; Kubo, Kiyoshi (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kuroda, Shigeru (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Naito, Takashi (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Okugi, Toshiyuki (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Patecki, Marcin (CERN) ; Pfingstner, Juergen (CERN) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN) et al.
Ground motion compensation using feed-forward control is a novel technique being developed to combat beam imperfections resulting from the vibration-induced misalignment of beamline components. The method is being evaluated experimentally at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2). [...]

Contribution of Optical Aberrations to Spot-size Increase with Bunch Intensity at ATF2 / Patecki, Marcin (CERN ; Warsaw U. of Tech.) ; Kubo, Kiyoshi (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kuroda, Shigeru (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Naito, Takashi (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Okugi, Toshiyuki (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Tauchi, Toshiaki (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Terunuma, Nobuhiro (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Tomás, Rogelio (CERN) ; White, Glen (SLAC) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN)
A primary goal of ATF2 (Accelerator Test Facility) is to demonstrate a low vertical beam size at the interaction point (IP) of about 37 nm. Measurements over the past years indicate that the ATF2 vertical beam size strongly rises with bunch intensity. [...]

Control of Intra-Bunch Vertical Instabilities at the SPS - Measurements and Technology Demonstration / Fox, John (SLAC) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; De Santis, Stefano (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Dusatko, John (SLAC) ; Höfle, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Li, Kevin (CERN) ; Métral, Elias (CERN) ; Rivetta, Claudio (SLAC) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Turgut, Ozhan (SLAC) et al.
We present recent measurements demonstrating control of unstable beam motion in single bunch and bunch train configurations at the SPS. The work is motivated by anticipated intensity increases from the LIU and HL-LHC upgrade programs, and has included the development of a GHz bandwidth reconfigurable 4 GS/S signal processor with wideband kickers and associated amplifiers. Improving the Performance of an Orbit Feed-forward Based on Quadrupole Motion at the KEK ATF / Bett, Douglas (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, Oxford) ; Charrondière, Cedric (CERN) ; Christian, Glenn (JAI, Oxford) ; Jeremie, Andrea (Annecy, LAPP) ; Kubo, Kiyoshi (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Kuroda, Shigeru (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Naito, Takashi (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Okugi, Toshiyuki (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Patecki, Marcin (CERN) et al.
The high luminosity requirement for a future linear collider sets a demanding limit on the beam quality at the Interation Point (IP). Even the natural motion of the ground could misalign the quadrupole magnets to such an extent that the resulting dipole kicks would require compensation. [...]
