Operational experience and reliability of the new CERN Linac4

Since its completion in 2017, Linac4, the new 160 MeV proton injector for the CERN accelerator complex, has undergone some tests to assess and improve reliability, until being connected to the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) during the 2018-2020 Long Shutdown 2 (LS2). The performance requirements for the LHC high-luminosity upgrade have been successfully met, and during its first three complete years of operation the linac has shown high reliability figures. [...]

This paper reports the exploratory studies on advanced accelerator technologies performed within the I.FAST (Innovation Fostering in Accelerator Science and Technology) EU project, and in particular the key results of the additive manufacturing Task 10.2 – “Additive Manufacturing – applications and potential developments” and Task 10.3 – “Repair of damaged accelerator components by AM technologies”. This includes results of two surveys targeted to the accelerator community: a) on current additive manufacturing applications in accelerators and expected new developments, b) on current additive manufacturing repair technologies for accelerator and list of possible applications. At the end of Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), in 2020 Linac4 became the new injector of CERN’s proton accelerator complex. The previous version of the Linac4 H⁻ ion source (IS03), produced an operational pulsed peak beam current of 35 mA, resulting in 27 mA after the Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). [...]
