Cosmology with gravitational-wave standard sirens / TAMANINI, Nicola (speaker) (L2IT / CNRS)
Abstract: Gravitational-wave (GW) cosmology has recently been established as a new observationally-driven research field, and is expected to expand rapidly in the future thanks to the increasing number of ever more accurate GW observations. In this talk I will review the current status of GW cosmological results and will survey the expectations for the future [...]

Cosmology with massive black hole binary mergers in the LISA era / Mangiagli, Alberto (APC, Paris) ; Caprini, Chiara (Geneva U. ; CERN) ; Volonteri, Marta (Paris, Inst. Astrophys.) ; Marsat, Sylvain (L2IT, Toulouse) ; Vergani, Susanna (LUTH, Meudon ; GEPI, Meudon ; LERMA, Ivry) ; Tamanini, Nicola (L2IT, Toulouse) ; Speri, Lorenzo (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.)
In $\sim2034$ the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect the coalescence of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) from $10^5$ to $10^7 {\, \rm M}_\odot$ up to $z\sim10$. The gravitational wave (GW) signal is expected to be accompanied by a powerful electromagnetic (EM) counterpart, from radio to X-ray, generated by the gas accreting on the binary. If LISA locates the MBHB merger within an error box $<10 \, \rm deg^2$, EM telescopes can be pointed in the same portion of the sky to detect the emission from the last stages of the MBHB orbits or the very onset of the nuclear activity, paving the way to test the nature of gas in a rapidly changing space-time. Massive black hole binaries in LISA: multimessenger prospects and electromagnetic counterparts / Mangiagli, Alberto (APC, Paris) ; Caprini, Chiara (Geneva U. ; CERN) ; Volonteri, Marta (Paris, Inst. In the next decade, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect the coalescence of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) in the range $[10^4, 10^8] \, \rm M_{\odot}$, up to $z\sim10$. Their gravitational wave (GW) signal is expected to be accompanied by an electromagnetic counterpart (EMcp), generated by the gas accreting on the binary or on the remnant BH. [...]

Cosmology with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna / LISA Cosmology Working Group Collaboration
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has two scientific objectives of cosmological focus: to probe the expansion rate of the universe, and to understand stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and their implications for early universe and particle physics, from the MeV to the Planck scale. However, the range of potential cosmological applications of gravitational wave observations extends well beyond these two objectives. [...]

New horizons for fundamental physics with LISA / LISA Collaboration
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of GWs can be expected to provide key input. [...]

Observing GW190521-like binary black holes and their environment with LISA / Sberna, Laura (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.) ; Babak, Stanislav (APC, Paris) ; Marsat, Sylvain (L2IT, Toulouse) ; Caputo, Andrea (Tel Aviv U. ; Weizmann Inst.) ; Cusin, Giulia (Geneva U. ; Paris, Inst. Astrophys.) ; Toubiana, Alexandre (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.) ; Barausse, Enrico (SISSA, Trieste ; INFN, Trieste ; INFM, Trieste ; IFPU, Trieste) ; Caprini, Chiara (Geneva U. ; CERN) ; Dal Canton, Tito (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Sesana, Alberto (Milan Bicocca U. ; INFN, Milan Bicocca) et al.
Binaries of relatively massive black holes like GW190521 have been proposed to form in dense gas environments, such as the disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), and they might be associated with transient electromagnetic counterparts. The interactions of this putative environment with the binary could leave a significant imprint at the low gravitational wave frequencies observable with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We propose a space-based interferometer surveying the gravitational wave (GW) sky in the milli-Hz to $\mu$-Hz frequency range. By the 2040s', the $\mu$-Hz frequency band, bracketed in between the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and pulsar timing arrays, will constitute the largest gap in the coverage of the astrophysically relevant GW spectrum. Prospects for Fundamental Physics with LISA / LISA Collaboration
In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics.
