Injection of electrons by colliding laser pulses in a laser wakefield accelerator / Hansson, Martin (Lund University) ; Aurand, Bastian (Lund University) ; Ekerfelt, Henrik (Lund University) ; Persson, Anna (Lund University) ; Lundh, Olle (Lund University)
To improve the stability and reproducibility of laser wakefield accelerators and to allow for future applications, controlling the injection of electrons is of great importance. This allows us to control the amount of charge in the beams of accelerated electrons and final energy of the electrons. [...]

Investigation of ionization-induced electron injection in a wakefield driven by laser inside a gas cell. / Audet, T. L. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Hansson, M. (Lund U.) ; Lee, P. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Desforges, F. Ionization-induced electron injection was investigated experimentally by focusing a driving laser pulse with a maximum normalized potential of 1.2 at different positions along the plasma density profile inside a gas cell, filled with a gas mixture composed of 99%H2 þ 1%N2. Changing the laser focus position relative to the gas cell entrance controls the accelerated electron bunch properties, such as the spectrum width, maximum energy, and accelerated charge. [...]

Supersonic jets of hydrogen and helium for laser wakefield acceleration / Svensson, K. (Lund U.) ; Hansson, M. (Lund U.) ; Wojda, F. (Lund U.) ; Senje, L. (Lund U.) ; Burza, M. (Lund U.) ; Aurand, B. (Lund U.) ; Genoud, G. (Lund U.) ; Persson, A. (Lund U.) ; Wahlström, C.-G. (Lund U.) ; Lundh, O. (Lund U.)
The properties of laser wakefield accelerated electrons in supersonic gas flows of hydrogen and helium are investigated. At identical backing pressure, we find that electron beams emerging from helium show large variations in their spectral and spatial distributions, whereas electron beams accelerated in hydrogen plasmas show a higher degree of reproducibility. Localization of ionization-induced trapping in a laser wakefield accelerator using a density down-ramp / Hansson, M. (Lund U.) ; Audet, T. L. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Ekerfelt, H. (Lund U.) ; Aurand, B. (Lund U.) ; Gallardo Ganzalez, I. (Lund U.) ; Desforges, F. G. (LPGP, Orsay) ; Davoine, X. (CEA DAM) ; Maitrallain, A. (Saclay) ; Reymond, S. (Lund U. ; ENSTA, Paris) ; Monot, P. (Saclay) et al.
We report on a study on controlled trapping of electrons, by field ionization of nitrogen ions, in laser wakefield accelerators in variable length gas cells. In addition to ionization-induced trapping in the density plateau inside the cells, which results in wide, but stable, electron energy spectra, a regime of ionization-induced trapping localized in the density down-ramp at the exit of the gas cells, is found. Down-ramp injection and independently controlled acceleration of electrons in a tailored laser wakefield accelerator / Hansson, M. (Lund U.) ; Aurand, B. (Lund U.) ; Davoine, X. (CEA DAM) ; Ekerfelt, H. (Lund U.) ; Svensson, K. (Lund U.) ; Persson, A. (Lund U.) ; Wahlström, C.-G. (Lund U.) ; Lundh, O. (Lund U.)
We report on a study on controlled injection of electrons into the accelerating phase of a plasma wakefield accelerator by tailoring the target density distribution using two independent sources of gas. The tailored density distribution is achieved experimentally by inserting a narrow nozzle, with an orifice diameter of only 400  μm , into a jet of gas supplied from a 2 mm diameter nozzle. [...]
