CR antinuclei predictions and their detectability in the next years
/ De la Torre Luque, Pedro (speaker)
The creation of anti-nuclei in the Galaxy has been has been discussed as a possible signal of exotic production mechanisms such as primordial black hole evaporation or dark matter decay/annihilation in addition to the more conventional production from cosmic-ray (CR) interactions. Tentative observations of cosmic-ray antihelium by the AMS-02 collaboration have re-energized the quest to use antinuclei to search for physics beyond the standard model. [...]

Characterization of plastic scintillators equipped with SiPM for the next generation of satellites for the study of cosmic radiation
/ Serini, D (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; De La Torre Luque, P (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Di Venere, L (INFN, Bari) ; Fusco, P (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Gargano, F (INFN, Bari) ; Giordano, F (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Loparco, F (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Loporchio, S (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Mazziotta, M N (INFN, Bari)
The next generation of satellite experiments for the studies of cosmic radiation will be equipped with plastic scintillators read-out by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), to be used as anti-coincidence detectors for gamma rays or for the identification of charged nuclei. For these applications, a high detection efficiency is required in order to ensure a high background rejection for the gamma-ray identification. [...]

Cosmic-ray interactions with the Sun using the FLUKA code
/ Mazziotta, M.N. (INFN, Bari) ; De La Torre Luque, P. (INFN, Bari ; U. Bari (main)) ; Di Venere, L. (INFN, Bari) ; Fassò, A. (PSI, SLS) ; Ferrari, A. (CERN) ; Loparco, F. (INFN, Bari ; U. Bari (main)) ; Sala, P.R. (INFN, Milan) ; Serini, D. (INFN, Bari ; U. Bari (main))
The interactions of cosmic rays with the solar atmosphere produce secondary particle which can reach the Earth. In this work we present a comprehensive calculation of the yields of secondary particles as gamma-rays, electrons, positrons, neutrons and neutrinos performed with the FLUKA code. [...]

Single- and multi-foils $^{27}$ Al(p,3pn) $^{24}$ Na activation technique for monitoring the intensity of high-energy beams
/ Curioni, A (CERN ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Froeschl, R (CERN) ; Glaser, M (CERN) ; Iliopoulou, E (CERN ; Aristotle U., Thessaloniki) ; La Torre, F P (CERN) ; Pozzi, F (CERN) ; Ravotti, F (CERN) ; Silari, M (CERN)
This paper discusses an experimental study of the spallation reaction $^{27}$ Al(p,3pn) $^{24}$Na in Al foils exposed to 24 $GeV c^{−1}$ protons, in the context of monitoring the intensity of multi-GeV proton beams through foil activation techniques. Since this reaction is sensitive to secondary neutrons and other energetic secondary hadrons, it is important to evaluate the impact of the foil thickness on the calculation of the beam intensity. Measurements of $^{55}$Fe activity in activated steel samples with GEMPix
/ Curioni, A (CERN ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Dinar, N (CERN ; Paris U., VI-VII) ; La Torre, F P (CERN) ; Leidner, J (CERN ; RWTH Aachen U.) ; Murtas, F (CERN ; Frascati) ; Puddu, S (CERN) ; Silari, M (CERN)
In this paper we present a novel method, based on the recently developed GEMPix detector, to measure the 55Fe content in samples of metallic material activated during operation of CERN accelerators and experimental facilities. The GEMPix, a gas detector with highly pixelated read-out, has been obtained by coupling a triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) to a quad Timepix ASIC. [...]

Monitoring reactions for the calibration of relativistic hadron beams
/ Ferrari, A (CERN) ; La Torre, F P (CERN ; Bern U., LHEP) ; Manessi, G P (CERN ; Liverpool U.) ; Pozzi, F (CERN ; Munich, Tech. U.) ; Silari, M (CERN)
The well-known foil activation technique was used to calibrate an ionisation chamber employed for the on-line beam monitoring of a 120 GeV c −1 mixed proton/pion beam at CERN. Two monitoring reactions were employed: the standard 27 Al(p,3pn) 24 Na and the alternative nat Cu(p,x) 24 Na. [...]
