The creation of anti-nuclei in the Galaxy has been has been discussed as a possible signal of exotic production mechanisms such as primordial black hole evaporation or dark matter decay/annihilation in addition to the more conventional production from cosmic-ray (CR) interactions. The next generation of satellite experiments for the studies of cosmic radiation will be equipped with plastic scintillators read-out by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), to be used as anti-coincidence detectors for gamma rays or for the identification of charged nuclei. This paper discusses an experimental study of the spallation reaction $^{27}$ Al(p,3pn) $^{24}$Na in Al foils exposed to 24 $GeV c^{−1}$ protons, in the context of monitoring the intensity of multi-GeV proton beams through foil activation techniques. Since this reaction is sensitive to secondary neutrons and other energetic secondary hadrons, it is important to evaluate the impact of the foil thickness on the calculation of the beam intensity. In this paper we present a novel method, based on the recently developed GEMPix detector, to measure the 55Fe content in samples of metallic material activated during operation of CERN accelerators and experimental facilities. Spallation cross sections from thin natural copper and iron targets bombarded by a mixed 120 GeV/c proton/pion beam were measured in an activation experiment at CERN. The beam intensity was monitored by a calibrated ionization chamber and the activity of several spallation products was measured (14 for copper and 16 for iron) by $\gamma${} spectrometry, allowing the absolute cross section of the mixed hadron beam to be derived.
