Wave-particle interactions in copper diamond / Portelli, Marcus (Malta U.) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mollicone, Pierluigi (Malta U.) ; Sammut, Nicholas (Malta U.)
In the context of wave propagation in solids caused by particle-matter interactions, the composite structure of copper diamond is believed to have a significant impact on the material’s response. This limits the accuracy of isotropic homogeneous elastic and elastic-plastic models used in earlier studies modeling the material’s behavior under such conditions. [...]

Behaviour of Ironless Inductive Position Sensors in Close Proximity to Each Other / Sammut, Nicholas (CERN ; Malta U.) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Grima, Adrian (CERN ; Malta U.) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN)
Safety critical systems like the collimators of the Large Hadron Collider require transducers which are immune to interference from their surroundings. The ironless inductive position sensor is used to measure the position of collimator jaws with respect to the beam and is designed to be immune to external DC or slowly changing magnetic fields. [...]

The South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST) was proposed in 2016 at the World Academy of Art and Science, with the objective of building a facility for charged particle cancer therapy for the South Eastern European countries. SEEIIST will offer the world-class research needed to reduce or even revert the brain drain that is causing a shortage of talent and economic losses in South East Europe. [...]

Development of a Real-Time Magnetic Field Measurement System for Synchrotron Control / Vella Wallbank, Joseph (CERN ; U. Malta) ; Amodeo, Maria (CERN ; Turin Polytechnic) ; Beaumont, Anthony (CERN) ; Buzio, Marco (CERN) ; Di Capua, Vincenzo (CERN ; U. Naples (main)) ; Grech, Christian (CERN ; U. Malta) ; Sammut, Nicholas (U. Malta) ; Giloteaux, David (CERN)
The precise knowledge of the magnetic field produced by dipole magnets is critical to the operation of a synchrotron. Real-time measurement systems may be required, especially in the case of iron-dominated electromagnets with strong non-linear effects, to acquire the magnetic field and feed it back to various users. Experimental thermal characterisation of an ironless inductive position sensor / Grima, Adrian (CERN ; U. Malta) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Sammut, Nicholas (CERN ; U. Malta)
This article reports an experimental study performed on the ironless inductive position sensor tounderstand the relationship between changes in the surrounding temperature and positionreading of the novel linear position sensor. The measured variation of the basic electrical com-ponents with temperature is presented and shows that the position drift of the sensor varies withthe state of the sensor. [...]

Thermomechanical Characterisation of Copper Diamond and Benchmarking with the MultiMat Experiment / Portelli, Marcus (Malta U. ; CERN) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mollicone, Pierluigi (Malta U.) ; Sammut, Nicholas (Malta U.) ; de Frutos, Óscar Sacristán (CERN) ; Valenzuela, Jorge Guardia (CERN) ; Neubauer, Erich (Austrian Inst. Tech., Seibersdorf) ; Kitzmantel, Michael (Austrian Inst. Tech., Seibersdorf) et al.
The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider upgrade at CERN will result in an increase in the energy stored in the circulating particle beams, making it necessary to assess the thermomechanical performance of currently used and newly developed materials for use in beam intercepting devices such as collimators and absorbers. This study describes the thermomechanical characterisation of a novel copper diamond grade selected for use in tertiary collimators of the HL-LHC. [...]
