An Analytical Approach to Calculate Soft Error Rate Induced by Atmospheric Neutrons / Wrobel, Frédéric (IES, Montpellier) ; Aguiar, Ygor (CERN) ; Marques, Cleiton (IES, Montpellier) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Alía, Rubén García (CERN) ; Saigné, Frédéric (IES, Montpellier) ; Boch, Jérôme (IES, Montpellier)
In the atmosphere, it is generally understood that neutrons are the main contributor to the soft error rate (SER) in electronic devices. These particles are indeed able to trigger nuclear reactions in the sensitive regions of the devices, leading to secondary ions that may ionize the matter sufficiently to upset a memory cell or induce a transient signal, known as soft errors. Benchmarks of Energy Deposition Studies for Heavy-Ion Collimation Losses at the LHC / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frederic (IES, Montpellier)
During some periods in its second physics run (2015-2018), the LHC has been operated with 208Pb⁸²⁺ ion beams at an energy of 6.37 ZTeV. The LHC is equipped with a betatron collimation system, which intercepts the transverse beam halo and protects sensitive equipment such as superconducting magnets against beam losses. [...]

Power Deposition Studies for Crystal-Based Heavy Ion Collimation in the LHC / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frederic (IES, Montpellier)
The LHC heavy-ion program with 208Pb⁸²⁺ beams is foreseen to benefit from a significant intensity upgrade in 2022. A performance limitation may arise from ion fragments scattered out of the collimators in the betatron cleaning insertion, which risk quenching superconducting magnets during periods of short beam lifetime. [...]

Risk of Halo-Induced Magnet Quenches in the HL-LHC Beam Dump Insertion / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; Montpellier U.) ; Apollonio, Andrea (CERN) ; Belli, Eleonora (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN) et al.
After the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade, the LHC will be exposed to a higher risk of magnet quenches during periods of short beam lifetime. Collimators in the extraction region (IR6) assure the protection of magnets against asynchronous beam dumps, but they also intercept a fraction of the beam halo leaking from the betatron cleaning insertion. SEE Flux and Spectral Hardness Calibration of Neutron Spallation and Mixed-Field Facilities / Cecchetto, Matteo (CERN) ; Fernández-Martínez, Pablo (CERN) ; García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Ferraro, Rudy (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frédéric (IES, Montpellier) ; Cazzaniga, Carlo (Daresbury) ; Frost, Christopher D (Daresbury)
The approach of calibrating neutron environments through well-known Single Event Upset (SEU)-based SRAM memories is applied to a neutron spallation and mixed-field facility. Implications on the Soft Error Rate (SER) induced by intermediate energy neutrons are evaluated comparing operational environments, such as ground level and accelerator shielded areas, with those reproducible by facilities. Thermal Neutron-Induced SEUs in the LHC Accelerator Environment / Cecchetto, Matteo (CERN) ; García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frédéric (IES, Montpellier) ; Tali, Maris (CERN) ; Stein, Oliver (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi (CERN) ; Bahamonde Castro, Cristina (CERN) ; Kadi, Yacine (CERN) et al.
In addition to high-energy hadrons, which include neutrons, protons, and pions above 20 MeV, thermal neutrons (ThNs) are a major concern in terms of soft error rate (SER) for electronics operating in the large hadron collider (LHC) accelerator at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Most of the electronic devices still contain Boron-10 inside their structure, which makes them sensitive to ThNs. [...]

Direct Ionization Impact on Accelerator Mixed-Field Soft-Error Rate / García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Tali, Maris (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Cecchetto, Matteo (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Cononetti, Andrea (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi (CERN) ; Fernández-Martínez, Pablo (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) et al.
We investigate, through measurements and simulations, the possible direct ionization impact on the accelerator soft-error rate (SER), not considered in standard qualification approaches. Results show that, for a broad variety of state-of-the-art commercial components considered in the 65–16-nm technological range, indirect ionization is still expected to dominate the overall SER in the accelerator mixed-field. Impact of Energy Dependence on Ground Level and Avionic SEE Rate Prediction When Applying Standard Test Procedures / Cecchetto, Matteo (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frédéric (IES, Montpellier)
Single event effects (SEEs) in ground level and avionic applications are mainly induced by neutrons and protons, of which the relative contribution of the latter is larger with increasing altitude. Currently, there are two main applicable standards—JEDEC JESD89A for ground level and IEC 62396 for avionics—that address the procedure for testing and qualifying electronics for these environments.
