First on-line application of the high-resolution spectroscopy laser ion source PI-LIST at ISOLDE
/ Heinke, Reinhard (CERN) ; Au, Mia (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Bernerd, Cyril (CERN ; Leuven U.) ; Chrysalidis, Katerina (CERN) ; Cocolios, Thomas E (Leuven U.) ; Fedosseev, Valentin N (CERN) ; Hendriks, Isabel (CERN ; Lund U. (main)) ; Jaradat, Asar A H (CERN) ; Kaja, Magdalena (Mainz U., Inst. Phys.) ; Kieck, Tom (Darmstadt, GSI ; Helmholtz Inst., Mainz) et al.
We report on the development, characterization, and first application of a specialized resonance ionization laser ion source for high-resolution spectroscopy applications below usual hot cavity Doppler broadening limitations, for on-line experiments at CERN-ISOLDE. The new PI-LIST ion source comprises perpendicular laser/atom beam interaction in a radio-frequency quadrupole unit directly downstream the hot atomizer cavity. [...]

Toward the end-to-end optimization of particle physics instruments with differentiable programming
/ MODE Collaboration
The full optimization of the design and operation of instruments whose functioning relies on the interaction of radiation with matter is a super-human task, given the large dimensionality of the space of possible choices for geometry, detection technology, materials, data-acquisition, and information-extraction techniques, and the interdependence of the related parameters. On the other hand, massive potential gains in performance over standard, "experience-driven" layouts are in principle within our reach if an objective function fully aligned with the final goals of the instrument is maximized by means of a systematic search of the configuration space. [...]

This report summarizes the presentations and discussions during the Rapid Reaction Task Force "Dynamics of critical fluctuations: Theory -- phenomenology -- heavy-ion collisions", which was organized by the ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI and held at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany in April 2019. We address the current understanding of the dynamics of critical fluctuations in QCD and their measurement in heavy-ion collision experiments. [...]

A group of Early-Career Researchers (ECRs) has been given a mandate from the European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) to debate the topics of the current European Strategy Update (ESU) for Particle Physics and to summarise the outcome in a brief document [1]. A full-day debate with 180 delegates was held at CERN, followed by a survey collecting quantitative input. [...]
