Benchmarking of PATH and RF-Track in the Simulation of Linac4
/ Bellodi, Giulia ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste ; Latina, Andrea ; Lombardi, Alessandra
A benchmarking campaign has been initiated to compare PATH and RF-Track in modelling high-intensity, low-energy hadron beams. The development of extra functionalities in RF-Track was required to handle an unbunched beam from the source and to ease the user interface. [...]

At the end of Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), in 2020 Linac4 became the new injector of CERN’s proton accelerator complex. The previous version of the Linac4 H⁻ ion source (IS03), produced an operational pulsed peak beam current of 35 mA, resulting in 27 mA after the Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). [...]

The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project was put in place between 2010 and 2021 to increase the intensity and brightness in the LHC injectors to match the challenging requirements of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, while ensuring reliable operation of the injectors complex up to the end of the HL-LHC era (ca. 2040). Summary of the First Fully Operational Run of LINAC4 at CERN
/ Skowroński, Piotr (CERN) ; Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Bielawski, Bartosz Przemyslaw (CERN) ; Borner, Robert (CERN) ; Di Giovanni, Gian Piero (CERN) ; Gousiou, Evangelia (CERN) ; Lallement, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Mikulec, Bettina (CERN) ; Parra-Lopez, Julien (CERN) et al.
In December 2020 the newly commissioned LINAC4 started delivering beam for the CERN proton accelerator chain, replacing the old LINAC2. LINAC4 is a 352 MHz normal conducting linac, providing a beam of negative hydrogen ions at 160 MeV that are converted into protons at injection into the PS Booster synchrotron. [...]

Achievements and Performance Prospects of the Upgraded LHC Injectors

To provide HL-LHC performance, the CERN LHC injector chain underwent a major upgrade during an almost 2-year-long shutdown. In the first half of 2021 the injectors were gradually re-started with the aim to reach at least pre-shutdown parameters for LHC as well as for fixed target beams. [...]

Linac4, a 160 MeV, 352.2 MHz linear accelerator, has been fully commissioned and will take its place as injector to the CERN chain of accelerators during the long shutdown (LS2) in 2019-2020. In the past year, it has been providing beam during a test run to assess its reliability in view of the connection to the LHC proton injector chain. [...]
