Shielded Pair Method for Beam Screen Surface Resistance Measurement at Cryogenic Temperature / Brunner, Kristóf (CERN ; Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Krkotić, Patrick (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Barna, Dániel (Wigner RCP, Budapest)
The shielded pair resonator method is a useful tool in the measurement of accelerator components, such as the beam screens used in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the High-Luminosity (HL) LHC, or future accelerators. It can measure the resistive losses at several frequency points by separating the resistive losses on the sample from other sources of losses. [...]

Understanding of the LHC warm vacuum module heating / Krkotic, Patrick (CERN) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Chiggiato, Paolo (CERN) ; Papaphilippou, Yannis (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Antuono, Chiara (CERN ; Rome U.) ; Bregliozzi, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; de la Fuente, Elena (CERN ; Madrid, Polytechnic U.) ; Galloro, Alessio (Calabria U. ; CERN) et al.
During the third run of the Large Hadron Collider in 2023, which had the highest intensity bunch population compared to previous runs, increased losses attributed to pressure spikes within a warm vacuum sector triggered a beam dump. Subsequent inspections revealed localised annealing and plasticisation of the tension spring in the sliding contact radio-frequency finger module, alongside traces of vapour deposition on the various module components with the stainless-steel spring material. Nonlinear Surface Impedance of HTS in High Magnetic Fields / Vaglio, Ruggero (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Krkotić, Patrick (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN)
Recently envisaged high-temperature superconductor (HTS) applications rely on their radio-frequency properties in very high magnetic fields. As an example, coating of surfaces facing particle beams with HTS for reducing the beam coupling impedance is being considered for the next generation of hadron colliders, such as the FCC-hh at CERN, where HTS would be exposed to the high-frequency wakefields generated by the particle bunches and to the strong field (>16 T) of the steering magnets. RF characterisation of laser treated copper surfaces for the mitigation of electron cloud in accelerators / Krkotic, Patrick (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Abdolvand, Amin (Dundee U.) ; Perez Fontenla, Ana Teresa (CERN) ; Neupert, Holger (CERN) ; Himmerlich, Marcel (CERN) ; Wackerow, Stefan (Dundee U.)
In accelerator beam chambers and RF waveguides, electron cloud and multipacting can be mitigated effectively by reducing the secondary electron yield (SEY). In recent years, it has been established that laser surface structuring is a very efficient method to create a copper surface with SEY close to or even below unity. [...]

Evaluation of the impact of REBCO-coated conductors on the resistive wall impedance of the FCC-hh / Tagdulang, N D (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Günzel, T (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Pont, M (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Krkotic, P (CERN) ; O'Callaghan, J M (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.)
The beam screen for the Future Circular hadron-hadron Collider (FCC-hh) has a baseline design based on a copper (Cu) coating. Calculations have indicated that the resistive wall impedance will be the major contributor to the beam impedance for the FCC-hh at both injection and collision and that Cu might be on the limit to ensure beam stability. Impedance analysis of deformable RF contact bridges for high luminosity LHC / Krkotic, P (CERN) ; Calatroni, S (CERN) ; Neroni, M (CERN) ; Völlinger, C (CERN) ; Salvant, B (CERN) ; Baglin, V (CERN) ; Garion, C (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, G (CERN)
In order to maintain the continuity of the vacuum system wall and comply with beam stability limits, radio frequency contact bridges are utilised as transitional elements in beam vacuum line interconnections. These radio frequency contact bridges must absorb and correct longitudinal, angular, and transverse misalignments brought on by mechanical motions during assembly, alignment, operating phases and thermal influences during accelerator operation. Performance of high-temperature superconducting REBCO coated conductors under synchrotron irradiation for future circular colliders / Krkotić, Patrick (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Traver, Oriol (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; Tagdulang, Nikki (CELLS - ALBA, LLS ; Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Manuel O’Callaghan, Juan (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Pont, Montse (CELLS - ALBA, LLS)
The influence of medium-to-high energy synchrotron radiation (SR) (≈10–100 keV) produced by the ALBA Synchrotron Light Source on state-of-the-art REBCO coated conductors (CCs) has been studied to assess the feasibility of using high-temperature superconductors for the beam screen of future circular colliders. Long-term irradiation studies were conducted with ex-situ surface resistance testing by using a dielectric resonator. [...]

Dielectric resonator to measure surface resistance of accelerator components at room temperature and 77 K / Brunner, Kristóf (CERN) ; Krkotić, Patrick (CERN) ; Pinto, Pedro Costa (CERN) ; Diaz-Rato, Eduardo Gibbons (CERN) ; Pfeiffer, Stephan (CERN) ; Vollenberg, Wilhelmus (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Barna, Dániel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Pont, Montse (CELLS - ALBA, LLS) ; O'Callaghan, Joan (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.)
We measured the surface resistance of titanium, amorphous carbon, and nonevaporable getter (NEG) coatings on copper samples, representative of surface treatments of beam-facing components in the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Measurements were done at room temperature as well as at liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) by means of a novel large dielectric resonator operating at 3.4 GHz. [...]

Electron Beam Characterization of REBCO-Coated Conductors at Cryogenic Conditions / Haubner, Michal (CERN ; Prague, Tech. U.) ; Krkotic, Patrick (CERN) ; Serafim, Catarina (CERN ; Helsinki U.) ; Petit, Valentine (CERN) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN) ; Romanov, Artur (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Puig, Teresa (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Gutierrez, Joffre (Barcelona, Autonoma U.)
Particle accelerators with superconducting magnets operating at cryogenic temperatures use a beam screen (BS) liner that extracts heat generated by the circulating bunched charge particle beam before it can reach the magnets. The BS surface, commonly made of high-conductivity copper, provides a low impedance for beam stability reasons, low secondary electron yield (SEY)to mitigate the electron-cloud (EC) effect, and low electron-stimulated desorption yield (ESD) to limit the dynamic pressure rise due to EC.
