The electric-field gradient (EFG) at nuclei in solids is a sensitive probe of the charge distribution. Experimental data, which previously only existed in insulators, have been available for metals with the development of nuclear measuring techniques since about 1970. [...]

Half-century old Berkeley idea now finding missing links of nuclear quadrupole moments / Haas, Heinz (Aveiro U. ; CERN)
There are basically two ways to determine precision values for nuclear quadrupole moments (Q): measurements for stable or reasonably long-lived (mostly ground) states by atomic and molecular spectroscopy and measurements for much shorter-lived excited states using nuclear condensed-matter techniques like Mössbauer or perturbed-angular distribution and correlation (PAC) spectroscopy. In all cases, the direct experimental result is the product of the electric-field gradient (EFG) at the nuclear site with Q. [...]

Free Molecule Studies by Perturbed $\gamma - \gamma$ Angular Correlation: A New Path to Accurate Nuclear Quadrupole Moments / Haas, Heinz (CERN ; U. Aveiro (main)) ; Röder, Jens (CERN ; U. Accurate nuclear quadrupole moment values are essential as benchmarks for nuclear structure models and for the interpretation of experimentally determined nuclear quadrupole interactions in terms of electronic and molecular structure. Here, we present a novel route to such data by combining perturbed γ-γ angular correlation measurements on free small linear molecules, realized for the first time within this work, with state-of-the-art ab initio electronic structure calculations of the electric field gradient at the probe site. Last 3 years of the SC-ISOLDE and move to PS-Booster / HAAS, Heinz (speaker) (CERN-ISOLDE)

Oxygen ordering in the high-T$_c$ superconductor HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+\delta}$ as revealed by perturbed angular correlation / Mendonca, Tania Melo (Neel Lab, Grenoble ; Porto U.) ; Correia, Joao Guilherme (ITN, Sacavem ; Lisbon U., CFNUL) ; Haas, Heinz (ITN, Sacavem) ; Odier, Philippe (Neel Lab, Grenoble) ; Tavares, Pedro (UTAD, Vila Real) ; Silva, Manuel Ribeiro (Lisbon U., CFNUL) ; Lopes, Armandina (Lisbon U., CFNUL) ; Pereira, Andre (Porto U.) ; Goncalves, Joao Nuno (U. Aveiro) ; Amaral, Joao (U. Aveiro) et al.
Lattice sites and collective ordering of oxygen atoms in HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+\delta}$ were studied using the perturbed angular correlation (PAC) technique at ISOLDE/CERN. The electric field gradients (EFG) at $^{199m}$Hg nuclei have been measured as functions of oxygen doping on the Hg planes, above and below T$_c$. [...]

Perturbed angular correlations studies in the HgBa$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{6+\delta}$ high-T$_c$ superconductor / Mendonca, Tania Melo (Porto U.) ; Correia, Joao Guilherme (ITN, Sacavem) ; Haas, Heinz (ITN, Sacavem) ; Odier, Philippe (Neel Lab, Grenoble) ; Tavares, Pedro (UTAD, Vila Real) ; SIlva, Manuel Ribeiro (Lisbon U., CFNUL) ; Lopes, Armandina (Lisbon U., CFNUL) ; Darie, Celine (Neel Lab, Grenoble) ; Araujo, Joao Pedro (Porto U.)
The electric field gradients at $^{199m}$Hg nuclei have been measured via the perturbed angular correlation (PAC) technique, allowing a full characterization of the Hg neighborhood charge distribution at high oxygen doping on the Hg planes. The PAC technique has been applied to investigate the effect of high oxygen pressure during the measurement. [...]
