The present paper describes the new, original implementation of a point-wise neutron treatment that is made available with FLUKA v4.3-0 (https://fluka.cern). The development is based on the pre-processed neutron data libraries for Geant4 code (https://cern.ch/geant4). [...]

Advanced simulation techniques for Radiation Protection studies at the Large Hadron Collider
/ Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Lorenzon, Tommaso (CERN) ; Tisi, Marco (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN)
The paper provides an overview of the radiation protection challenges and the advanced simulation techniques used to study and plan complex interventions in radiation areas at CERN, particularly with regard to the Large Hadron Collider. The operational radiation protection aspects are supported by state of the art simulations by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and estimates obtained via several tools, used within the CERN Radiation Protection group, such as ActiWiz, SESAME, and the Fluence Conversion Coefficients (FCC) method which extend the built-in FLUKA capabilities. Monte Carlo intercomparison and benchmark of the neutron streaming in the ramified access maze of the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed field (CHARM) facility at CERN
/ Bozzato, D (CERN) ; Devienne, A (Fusion for Energy, Barcelona) ; Froeschl, R (CERN) ; Infantino, A (CERN) ; Lorenzon, T (CERN) ; Pozzi, F (CERN) ; Tisi, M (CERN) ; Nakao, N (Tokyo Inst. Tech.) ; Kajimoto, T (Hiroshima U.) ; Sanami, T (KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
Experiments of high-energy neutron streaming were performed in the access maze of the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed-field (CHARM) facility where high-intensity proton beams of 24 GeV/c impact on a copper target. The streaming of the secondary neutrons through the various legs of the ramified access maze of the facility was measured using aluminium activation detectors installed at 12 different locations: for the first time, the extended coverage of measurement locations allowed to assess the streaming in more distant areas of the maze. Scandium thermal release from activated natTi and natV target materials in mixed particle fields: Investigation of parameters relevant for isotope mass separation
/ Mamis, E (CERN ; Latvia U.) ; Kalnina, P (CERN ; Latvia U.) ; Duchemin, C (CERN) ; Lambert, L (CERN) ; Conan, N (CERN) ; Deschamps, M (CERN) ; Dorsival, A (CERN) ; Froeschl, R (CERN) ; Ruiz, F Ogallar (CERN) ; Theis, C (CERN) et al.
Scandium (Sc) has gained significant interest in nuclear medicine due to its 43Sc, 44g/mSc, and 47Sc radioactive isotopes being suitable for cancer diagnostics and therapy, offering a promising avenue for theranostics. Various production methods, including irradiation of enriched or naturally abundant calcium (Ca), titanium (Ti), and vanadium (V) materials with different particle beams, have been investigated to produce 43Sc, 44g/mSc, and 47Sc. Radiological Characterization with a Fluence Conversion Coefficients–Based Method: A Practical Example of the Preparatory Studies to the Pilot Beam at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
/ Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN)
At high-energy accelerator facilities like the ones that are part of the accelerator complex at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Monte Carlo radiation transport codes are widely employed to face the challenges of estimating radionuclide production yields and activities with the aim of performing the radiological characterization of activated components. Indeed, it is of paramount importance to ensure adequate radiation protection during scheduled maintenance, transport, and handling of these components and to establish their proper disposal pathway once they ultimately reach the end of their useful life. Neutron energy spectra down to thermal energy were measured using a Bonner sphere spectrometer (BSS) for various thicknesses of concrete and steel shielding at the CERN/CHARM facility, where high-energy neutrons were produced by 24-GeV/c protons incident on a thick copper target. The thicknesses of the concrete and steel shielding blocks ranged from 40 cm to 200 cm and from 20 cm to 80 cm, respectively. [...]
