Thick Wall from Thin Walls
/ Espinosa, J.R. (Madrid, IFT ; CERN)
An Euclidean bounce describing vacuum decay can be considered as an infinite stack of concentric thin shells to which a thin-wall action can be assigned. The integral over all shells produces then a tunneling action that is precisely the action functional in field space of the so-called tunneling potential formalism. [...]

Applications of the Tunneling Potential Formalism
/ Espinosa Sedano, Jose Ramon (speaker) (ICREA / IFAE Barcelona (ES))
The Tunneling Potential Formalism offers an alternative to the Euclidean bounce formalism for computing tunneling actions, which determine the decay of metastable vacua in quantum field theory. In this discussion, I will explore how this formalism can be applied to investigate various other problems, such as bubble-of-nothing decays, ungauged Q-balls, and more.

A Fresh Look at the Calculation of Tunneling Actions in Multi-Field Potentials
/ Espinosa, J.R. (Barcelona, IFAE ; ICREA, Barcelona ; CERN) ; Konstandin, T. (DESY)
The quantum decay of a metastable vacuum is exponentially suppressed by a tunneling action that can be calculated in the semi-classical approximation as the Euclidean action of a bounce that interpolates between the false and true phases. For multi-field potentials, finding the bounce is non-trivial due to its peculiar boundary conditions and the fact that the action at the bounce is not a minimum but merely a saddle point. [...]

Electroweak Baryogenesis With Cosmic Strings?
/ Espinosa, J R (CERN)
I report on a critical analysis of the scenario of electroweak baryogenesis
mediated by nonsuper conducting cosmic strings. This mechanism relies upon
electroweak symmetry restoration in a region around cosmic strings, where
sphalerons would be unsuppressed. [...]

Gauge-Independent Scales Related to the Standard Model Vacuum Instability
/ Espinosa, Jose R. (Barcelona, IFAE ; ICREA, Barcelona) ; Garny, Mathias (CERN) ; Konstandin, Thomas (DESY) ; Riotto, Antonio (Geneva U., Dept. Theor. Phys. ; Geneva U., CAP)
The measured (central) values of the Higgs and top quark masses indicate that the Standard Model (SM) effective potential develops an instability at high field values. The scale of this instability, determined as the Higgs field value at which the potential drops below the electroweak minimum, is about $10^{11}$ GeV. [...]

Interplay of Infrared Divergences and Gauge-Dependence of the Effective Potential
/ Espinosa, J.R. (Barcelona, IFAE ; ICREA, Barcelona) ; Garny, M. (CERN) ; Konstandin, T. (DESY)
The perturbative effective potential suffers infrared (IR) divergences in gauges with massless Goldstones in their minima (like Landau or Fermi gauges) but the problem can be fixed by a suitable resummation of the Goldstone propagators. When the potential minimum is generated radiatively, gauge-independence of the potential at the minimum also requires resummation and we demonstrate that the resummation that solves the IR problem also cures the gauge-dependence issue, showing this explicitly in the Abelian Higgs model in Fermi gauge. A note on the fate of the Landau–Yang theorem in non-Abelian gauge theories

Using elementary considerations of Lorentz invariance, Bose symmetry and BRST invariance, we argue why the decay of a massive color-octet vector state into a pair of on-shell massless gluons is possible in a non-Abelian SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, we constrain the form of the amplitude of the process and offer a simple understanding of these results in terms of effective-action operators..

The Standard Model Higgs potential becomes unstable at large field values. After clarifying the issue of gauge dependence of the effective potential, we study the cosmological evolution of the Higgs field in presence of this instability throughout inflation, reheating and the present epoch. [...]

Higgs Inflation as a Mirage
/ Espinosa, Jose Ramon (speaker) (ICREA / IFAE Barcelona (ES))
After reviewing the nice properties of Higgs inflation and some of its problems, I will discuss a simple unitarization of the scenario that is genuinely weakly coupled up to Planckian energies. A large non-minimal coupling between the Higgs and the Ricci curvature is induced dynamically at intermediate energies, as a simple ratio of mass scales. [...]
