In order to achieve a high luminosity in the future electron-positron circular collider (FCC-ee), very intense multi-bunch colliding beams should have nanometer scale transverse beam sizes at the collision points. For this purpose the emittances of the colliding beams are chosen to be very small, comparable to those of the modern synchrotron light sources, while the stored beam currents should be close to the best values achieved in the last generation of particle factories. CompactLight (XLS) is an International Collaboration of 24 partners and 5 third parties, funded by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The main goal of the project, which started in January 2018 with a duration of 36 months, is the design of an hard X-ray FEL facility beyond today’s state of the art, using the latest concepts for bright electron photo-injectors, high-gradient accelerating structures, and innovative short-period undulators. The CompactLight European consortium is designing a state-of-the-art X-ray free-electron
laser driven by radiofrequency X-band technology. Rooted in experimental data on photo-injector
performance in the recent literature, this study estimates analytically and numerically the performance
of the CompactLight delivery system for bunch charges in the range 75–300 pC. [...]

As part of the deign studies, the CompactLight project plans to use an injector in the C-band. Which constitutes a particular complication for the harmonic system in charge of linearising the beam’s phase space, since it means its operation frequency could be higher than the standard X-band RF technologies. Building the impedance model of a real machine

A reliable impedance model of a particle accelerator can be built by combining the beam coupling impedances of all the components. This is a necessary step to be able to evaluate the machine performance limitations, identify the main contributors in case an impedance reduction is required, and study the interaction with other mechanisms such as optics nonlinearities, transverse damper, noise, space charge, electron cloud, beam-beam (in a collider). The H2020 CompactLight Project aims at designing the next generation of compact X-rays Free-Electron Lasers, relying on very high gradient accelerating structures (X-band, 12 GHz), the most advanced concepts for high brightness electron photo injectors, and innovative compact short-period undulators. Compared to existing facilities, the proposed facility will benefit from a lower electron beam energy, due to the enhanced undulators performance, and will be significantly more compact, with a smaller footprint, as a consequence of the lower energy and the high-gradient X-band structures. Single Bunch Instabilities in FCC-ee
/ Belli, Eleonora (CERN) ; Castorina, Giovanni (INFN, Rome) ; Migliorati, Mauro (INFN, Rome) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Spataro, Bruno (Frascati) ; Zobov, Mikhail (Frascati)
FCC-ee is a high luminosity lepton collider with a centre-of-mass energy from 91 to 365 GeV. Due to the machine parameters and pipe dimensions, collective effects due to electromagnetic fields produced by the interaction of the beam with the vacuum chamber can be one of the main limitations to the machine performance. We illustrate the RF design of the X-band linac for the upgrade of the SPARC_LAB facility at INFN-LNF (EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB). The structures are travelling wave (TW) cavities, working on the 2π/3 mode, fed by klystrons with pulse compressor systems. [...]

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) study aims at designing different options of a post-LHC collider. The high luminosity electron-positron collider FCC-ee based on the crab waist concept is considered as an intermediate step on the way towards FCC-hh, a 100 TeV hadron collider using the same tunnel of about 100 km. Coupling Impedances and Collective Effects for FCC-ee
/ Belli, Eleonora (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Castorina, Giovanni (Frascati) ; Migliorati, Mauro (Rome U.) ; Novokhatski, Alexander (SLAC) ; Persichelli, Serena (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Spataro, Bruno (Frascati) ; Zobov, Mikhail (Frascati)
A very important issue for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) is represented by collective effects due to the self-induced electromagnetic fields, which, acting back on the beam, could produce dangerous instabilities. In this paper we will focus our work on the FCC electron-positron machine: in particular we will study some important sources of wake fields, their coupling impedances and the impact on the beam dynamics.
