ATF2-3 hardware upgrade and new experimental results to maximize luminosity potential of linear colliders / Faus-Golfe, Angeles (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Aryshev, Alexander (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Lyapin, Alexey (Oxford U.) ; Kruchinin, Konstantin (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Terunuma, Nobuhiro (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Fuster-Martinez, Nuria (Valencia U., IFIC) ; Burrows, Philip (Oxford U.) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Okugi, Toshiyuki (KEK, Tsukuba) /ATF2 Collaboration
The ATF2-3 beamline is the only facility in the world for testing the Final Focus Beamline of linear colliders and is essential for the ILC and the CLIC projects. A vertical electron beam size of 41 nm (within 10% of the target), a closed-loop intra-bunch feedback of latency 133 ns, and direct stabilization of the beam position at the Interaction Point to 41 nm (limited by IP BPM resolution) have all been achieved at ATF2. Plasma accelerators present one of the most suitable candidates for the development of more compact particle acceleration technologies, yet they still lag behind radiofrequency (RF)-based devices when it comes to beam quality, control, stability and power efficiency. The Horizon 2020-funded project EuPRAXIA (“European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications”) aims to overcome the first three of these hurdles by developing a conceptual design for a first international user facility based on plasma acceleration. Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) appearing when a charged particle crosses a boundary between two media with different dielectric properties has widely been used as a tool for transverse profile measurements of charged particle beams in numerous facilities worldwide. The resolution of the conventional monitors is defined by the dimensions of the Point Spread Function (PSF) distribution, i.e. [...]

The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma acceleration (PWFA) and another site with a focus on laser-driven plasma acceleration (LWFA). The majority of optical diagnostics currently used will not stand up to the requirements of the next generation of particle accelerators. Current methodologies need innovation to be able to reach the sub-micrometre resolution and sensitivity that will be required. [...]

Diffraction Radiation for Non-Invasive, High-Resolution Beam Size Measurements in Future Linear Colliders / Bergamaschi, Michele (CERN ; JAI, UK ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Aryshev, Alexander (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Karataev, Pavel (Royal Holloway, U. of London ; JAI, UK) ; Kieffer, Robert (CERN) ; Kruchinin, Konstantin (Royal Holloway, U. of London ; JAI, UK) ; Lefèvre, Thibaut (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Terunuma, Nobuhiro (KEK, Tsukuba)
Next generation linear colliders such as the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) or the International Linear Collider (ILC) will accelerate particle beams with extremely small emittance. The high current and small size of the beam (micron-scale) due to such small emittance require non-invasive, high-resolution techniques for beam diagnostics. [...]
