Irradiation effects on Gd$_{3}$AI$_{3}$Ga$_{3}$O$_{12}$ scintillators prospective for application in harsh irradiation environments / Auffray, E (CERN) ; Dosovitskiy, G (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Fedorov, A (BSU, Minsk ; Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Guz, I (Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) ; Korjik, M (BSU, Minsk) ; Kratochwill, N (CERN) ; Lucchini, M (Princeton U.) ; Nargelas, S (Vilnius U.) ; Kozlov, D (BSU, Minsk) ; Mechinsky, V (BSU, Minsk ; Kurchatov Inst., Moscow) et al.
We provide evidences that multicomponent garnet-type Ce-doped crystal GAGG (Gd$_{3}$AI$_{3}$Ga$_{3}$O$_{12}$) is a promising scintillator to be applied in harsh irradiation environments, particularly, in high-energy physics experiments and reactor research facilities, where long-term operation is mandatory. Applicability of this scintillator for the upgrade of the detectors at future accelerators with high luminosity like High luminosity LHC is considered and GAGG:Ce with different codopings is compared with Ce-doped oxyorthosilicate crystals, which are currently also strong candidates for such applications. A new inorganic scintillation material based on Ba-Gd silica glass doped with cerium (BGS) is fabricated and studied. With the highest light yield among heavy glasses at the level of 2500 ph/MeV and fast scintillation response, the new scintillator ensures a good coincidence time resolution of < 230 ps FWHM for 511 keV  γ -quanta from a $^{22}$Na source and SiPM readout. Test beam characterization of sensor prototypes for the CMS Barrel MIP Timing Detector / CMS MTD Collaboration
The MIP Timing Detector will provide additional timing capabilities for detection of minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) at CMS during the High Luminosity LHC era, improving event reconstruction and pileup rejection. The central portion of the detector, the Barrel Timing Layer (BTL), will be instrumented with LYSO:Ce crystals and Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) providing a time resolution of about 30 ps at the beginning of operation, and degrading to 50-60 ps at the end of the detector lifetime as a result of radiation damage. The Spaghetti type Calorimeter (SPACAL) with fibers parallel to the beam direction is considered as an option for the inner part of the future LHCb Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) for the Upgrade Phase 2 [1]. In this work a simulation study of the time measurement precision has been performed for the electron and photon beams with energies of 1, 2, 4, 5 and 10 GeV..

Transient Phenomena in Scintillation Materials / Tamulaitis, G (Vilnius U.) ; Nargelas, S (Vilnius U.) ; Vaitkevičius, A (Vilnius U.) ; Lucchini, M (CERN) ; Auffray, E (CERN) ; Fedorov, A (Belarus State U.) ; Mechinsky, V (Belarus State U.) ; Korjik, M (Belarus State U.)
Time resolution becomes an increasingly important property of the scintillators to be exploited in radiation detectors for coming high-luminosity high-energy physics experiments and medical imaging applications. Multicomponent scintillators enable purposeful design of scintillation properties and, consequently, are attractive for fast radiation detection but suffer for the emission delay due to trapping of nonequilibrium carriers. The characteristics of a Gd$_3$Al$_2$Ga$_3$O$_{12}$ crystal scintillator doped with cerium and co-doped with magnesium and titanium have been studied, mainly in view of using it for the Phase II upgrade of the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter. Samples of the scintillator were irradiated with $\gamma$ ($^{60}$Co) to 2 kGy and with 24 GeV protons to 900 kGy. [...]
