We report on recent developments in positronium work in the frame of antihydrogen production through charge exchange in the AEgIS collaboration [1]. In particular, we present a new technique based on spatially imaging a cloud of positronium by collecting the positrons emitted by photoionization. [...]

We describe a multi-step “rotating wall” compression of a mixed cold antiproton–electron non-neutral plasma in a 4.46 T Penning–Malmberg trap developed in the context of the AEḡIS experiment at CERN. Such traps are routinely used for the preparation of cold antiprotons suitable for antihydrogen production. [...]

Positron Manipulation and Positronium Laser Excitation in AEgIS
/ Mariazzi, Sebastiano (OAW, Vienna) ; Caravita, Ruggero ; Aghion, Stefano ; Amsler, Claude ; Ariga, Akitaka ; Ariga, Tomoko ; Bonomi, Germano ; Bräunig, Philippe ; Bremer, Johan (CERN) ; Brusa, Roberto S et al.
Production of antihydrogen by using the charge exchange reaction, as proposed by AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy), requires the formation of a dense cloud of positronium atoms excited to Rydberg states. In this work, the recent advances in AEgIS towards this result are described. [...]

AEgIS experiment: Towards antihydrogen beam production for antimatter gravity measurements

AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is an experiment that aims to perform the first direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration g of antihydrogen in the Earth’s field. A cold antihydrogen beam will be produced by charge exchange reaction between cold antiprotons and positronium excited in Rydberg states. [...]

We describe an experiment performed in the ATHENA apparatus in which there is evidence that the antiproton-proton bound state, protonium, has been produced at very low energies in vacuum following the interaction of cold antiprotons with a trapped cloud of molecular hydrogen ions. [...]

Production of Slow Protonium in Vacuum
/ Zurlo, N. (Brescia U.) ; Lodi Rizzini, E. (Brescia U.) ; Venturelli, L. (Brescia U.) ; Amoretti, Marco (INFN, Genoa) ; Macri, M. (INFN, Genoa) ; Testera, G. (INFN, Genoa) ; Variola, A. (INFN, Genoa) ; Amsler, Claude (Zurich U.) ; Pruys, H. (Zurich U.) ; Regenfus, Christian (Zurich U.) et al.
We describe how protonium, the quasi-stable antiproton-proton bound system, has been synthesized following the interaction of antiprotons with the molecular ion H+2 in a nested Penning trap environment. From a careful analysis of the spatial distributions of antiproton annihilation events in the ATHENA experiment, evidence is presented for protonium production with sub-eV kinetic energies in states around n = 70, with low angular momenta.
