Recent progress in neutrino factory and muon collider research within the Muon Collaboration / International Muon Collaboration
We describe the status of our effort to realize a first neutrino factory and the progress made in understanding the problems associated with the collection and cooling of muons towards that end. We summarize the physics that can be done with neutrino factories as well as with intense cold beams of muons. [...]

Harmonic Cascade FEL Designs for LUX, a Facilty for Ultrafast X-ray Science / John, Corlett ; Fawley, William M ; Penn, Gregory ; Zholents, Alexander A
LUX is a proposed facility for ultrafast X-ray science, based on an electron beam accelerated to ~3-GeV energy in a superconducting, recirculating linac.Included in the design are multiple FEL beamlines which use the harmonic cascade approach to produce coherent XUV & soft X-ray emission beginning with a strong input external laser seed at ~200 nm wavelength. Each cascade module generally operates in the low-gain regime and is composed of a radiator together with a modulator section, separated by a magnetic chicane. [...]

Technological Improvements in the DARHT II Accelerator Cells / Prichard, Benjamin A ; Barraza, Juan ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Briggs, Richard J ; Chow, Ken ; Fawley, William M ; Genoni, Thomas E ; Henestroza, Enrique ; Hughes, Thomas P ; Kang, Mike et al.
DARHT employs two perpendicular electron Linear Induction Accelerators to produce intense, bremsstrahlung x-ray pulses for flash radiography. The second axis, DARHT II, features an 18 MeV, 2-kA, 2-microsecond accelerator. [...]

Optimization of the LCLS X-Rray FEL Output Performance in the Presence of Strong Undulator Wakefields / Reiche, Sven ; Bane, Karl Leopold Freitag ; Emma, Paul ; Fawley, William M ; Huang, Zhirong ; Nuhn, Heinz-Dieter ; Stupakov, Gennady
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) Free-Electron Laser will operate in the wavelength range of 1.5 to 15 Angstroms. Energy loss due to wakefields within the long undulator can degrade the FEL process by detuning the resonant FEL frequency. [...]

DARHT-II Long-Pulse Beam-Dynamics Experiments / Ekdahl, Carl ; Abeyta, E O ; Bartsch, Richard ; Bender, Howard ; Briggs, Richard J ; Broste, William ; Carlson, Carl ; Caudill, Larry ; Chan, Kwok-Chi D ; Chen Yu Jiuan et al.
When completed, the DARHT-II linear induction accelerator (LIA) will produce a 2-kA, 18-MeV electron beam with more than 1500-ns current/energy "flat-top." In initial tests DARHT-II has already accelerated beams with current pulse lengths from 500-ns to 1200-ns full-width at half maximum (FWHM) with more than1.2-kA, 12.5-MeV peak current and energy. Experiments are now underway with a ~2000-ns pulse length, but reduced current and energy. [...]

An Optimized Low-Charge Configuration of the LINAC Coherent Light Source / Emma, Paul ; Fawley, William M ; Huang, Zhirong ; Limborg-Deprey, Cecile ; Reiche, Sven ; Wu, Juhao ; Zolotorev, Max S
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) project based on the SLAC linac. The nominal parameter set is founded on a 1-nC bunch charge and normalized emittance of about 1 micron. [...]
