Transient finite-element simulations of fast-ramping muon-collider magnets / Moll, Dominik (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Boattini, Fulvio (CERN) ; De Gersem, Herbert (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Christmann, Jan-Magnus (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; D'Angelo, Laura (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Breschi, Marco (Bologna U.)
Conceptual studies for a muon collider identify fast-ramping magnets as a major design challenge. Rise rates of more than 1 T/ms are attainable with normal-conducting magnets, incorporating iron yokes to make sure that stored magnetic energies and inductances stay below reasonable thresholds. [...]

Towards a Muon Collider / Accettura, Carlotta (CERN) ; Adams, Dean (Rutherford) ; Agarwal, Rohit (UC, Berkeley (main)) ; Ahdida, Claudia (CERN) ; Aimè, Chiara (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Amapane, Nicola (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) ; Amorim, David (CERN) ; Andreetto, Paolo (INFN, Padua) ; Anulli, Fabio (INFN, Rome) ; Appleby, Robert (Manchester U.) et al.
A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. [...]

An Algorithm for Toroidal Field Harmonics Computation in Arbitrary Magnetic Configurations / Gambini, Laura (U. Bologna (main)) ; Breschi, Marco (U. Bologna (main)) ; Felcini, Enrico (CERN) ; Cristofolini, Andrea (U. Bologna (main)) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN)
Toroidal magnetic configurations are widely exploited in industry and scientific research, involving a vast spectrum of applications, such as thermonuclear fusion, particle detectors, SMES systems and medical devices. To properly design and analyse these systems, it is crucial to determine the magnetic field generated by different configurations. [...]

Modeling of beam loss induced quenches in the LHC main dipole magnets / Breschi, Marco (U. Bologna (main)) ; Felcini, Enrico (CERN) ; Breccia, Francesca (U. Bologna (main)) ; Winkler, Tiemo (Twente U., Enschede) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN)
The full energy exploitation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a planned increase of the beam energy beyond the present 6.5 TeV, will result in more demanding working conditions for the superconducting dipoles and quadrupoles operating in the machine. It is hence crucial to analyze, understand, and predict the quench levels of these magnets for the required values of current and generated magnetic fields. [...]

Impact of the Resistive Core on Losses in Superconducting Rutherford Cables: Analysis With the Continuum Model / Breschi, Marco (U. Bologna (main)) ; Musso, Andrea (U. Bologna (main)) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN)
Rutherford cables for particle accelerator magnets can be subjected to a time-varying magnetic field during the typical accelerator operating cycle, which in turn induces coupling currents flowing in the loops formed at the contacts between different strands. A proper analysis of the losses generated by these currents must be carried out for the design of the cryogenic system. [...]

Quench Level of the HL-LHC $Nb_3Sn$ IR Quadrupoles / Breschi, Marco (Bologna U.) ; Felcini, Enrico (Bologna U.) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN)
The scope of the Large Hadron Collider Hi-Lumi Project at CERN includes the installation of several superconducting magnets wound with $Nb_3Sn$ Rutherford cables. The quench level of these magnets (i.e. [...]

Analysis of Beam-Induced Quenches of the LHC Cables With a Multi-Strand Model / Breschi, Marco (Bologna U.) ; Bevilacqua, Andrea (Bologna U. ; CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Granieri, Pier Paolo (KIT, Karlsruhe, TP)
In this paper we discuss results of a one-dimensional numerical model to simulate electrical and thermal transients in the superconducting cables for the LHC machine, with specific reference to the analysis of quench due to the heat released by beam losses. Two models have been developed, one based on the analysis of the behavior of a single strand, whereas the other accounts for all the strands in the multi-strand cable. [...]
