Development and test of Nb$_3$Sn cos-theta dipoles based on PIT strands / Zlobin, A V (Fermilab) ; Ambrosio, G (Fermilab) ; Andreev, N (Fermilab) ; Barzi, E (Fermilab) ; Bossert, R (Fermilab) ; Carcagno, R (Fermilab) ; Chichili, D R (Fermilab) ; Elementi, L (Fermilab) ; Feher, S (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, V V (Fermilab) et al.
Fermilab is involved in the development of new generation high-field accelerator magnets using state-of-the-art Nb$_3$Sn strands produced using different technologies. Two 1-m long models-mirror configuration and dipole magnet-were fabricated recently at Fermilab based on powder-in-tube (PIT) Nb$_3$Sn strands with small effective filament size. [...]

Test results of shell-type Nb$_3$Sn dipole coils / Feher, S (Fermilab) ; Ambrosio, G (Fermilab) ; Andreev, N (Fermilab) ; Barzi, E (Fermilab) ; Carcagno, R (Fermilab) ; Chichili, D R (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, V (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, V V (Fermilab) ; Lamm, M J (Fermilab) ; Orris, D (Fermilab) et al.
Several different shell type coils were made by using the 'wind-and-react' technique, installed in a mirror magnet configuration and tested at Fermilab. The results revealed that the previously suspect splice technique is adequate and is not responsible for the quench performance limitation. [...]

The US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) consists of four US laboratories (BNL, FNAL, LBNL, and SLAC) collaborating with CERN to achieve a successful commissioning of the LHC and to develop the next generation of Interaction Region magnets. In 2004, a large aperture Nb$_3$Sn racetrack quadrupole magnet (SQ01) has been fabricated and tested at LBNL [...]

Development and test of LARP technological quadrupole (TQC) magnet / Feher, S (Fermilab) ; Bossert, R C (Fermilab) ; Ambrosio, G (Fermilab) ; Andreev, N (Fermilab) ; Barzi, E (Fermilab) ; Carcagno, R (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, V S (Fermilab) ; Kashikhin, V V (Fermilab) ; Lamm, M J (Fermilab) ; Nobrega, F (Fermilab) et al.
In support of the development of a large-aperture superconducting quadrupole for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) luminosity upgrade, two-layer quadrupole models (TQC and TQS) with 90 mm aperture are being constructed at Fermilab and LBNL within the framework of the US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP). This paper describes the construction and test of model TQC01. [...]

Efficiency of Finding Muon Track Trigger Primitives in CMS Cathode Strip Chambers / Acosta, Darin ; Adam, A ; Andreev, Valeri ; Apollinari, Giorgio ; Baek, Yong Wook ; Banicz, Karoly ; Barashko, Victor ; Barberis, Emanuela ; Bartalini, Paolo ; Bloch, Ingo et al.
In the CMS Experiment, muon detection in the forward direction is accomplished by cathode strip chambers~(CSC). These detectors identify muons, provide a fast muon trigger, and give a precise measurement of the muon trajectory. [...]

Recent progress in neutrino factory and muon collider research within the Muon Collaboration / International Muon Collaboration
We describe the status of our effort to realize a first neutrino factory and the progress made in understanding the problems associated with the collection and cooling of muons towards that end. We summarize the physics that can be done with neutrino factories as well as with intense cold beams of muons. [...]

The scattering of muons in low Z materials / MuScat Collaboration
This paper presents the measurement of the scattering of 172 MeV/c muons in assorted materials, including liquid hydrogen, motivated by the need to understand ionisation cooling for muon acceleration. Data are compared with predictions from the Geant 4 simulation code and this simulation is used to deconvolute detector effects. [...]

Fermilab is developing and investigating different high-field magnets (HFM) for present and future accelerators. The HFM R&D; program focused on the 10-12 T magnets based on Nb/sub 3/Sn superconductor and explored both basic magnet technologies for brittle superconductors-wind-and-react and react-and-wind.
