The Gamma Factory path to high-luminosity LHC with isoscalar beams / Krasny, M W (Paris U., VI-VII ; CERN) ; Petrenko, A (Novosibirsk, IYF ; CERN) ; Płaczek, W (Jagiellonian U. (main))
There are two main ways to increase LHC luminosity without upgrading CERN injectors: (1) modification of beam-collision optics and (2) reduction of beam transverse emittance. The former is followed in the ongoing high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC), while the latter, applicable only to ion beams, is described in this contribution [...]

The Gamma Factory (GF) is an ambitious proposal, currently explored within the CERN Physics Beyond Colliders program, for a source of photons with energies up to $\approx 400\,$MeV and photon fluxes (up to $\approx 10^{17}$ photons per second) exceeding those of the currently available gamma sources by orders of magnitude. The high-energy (secondary) photons are produced via resonant scattering of the primary laser photons by highly relativistic partially-stripped ions circulating in the accelerator. [...]

The Gamma Factory Project at CERN: a New Generation of Research Tools Made of Light / Gamma Factory Working Group Collaboration
The Gamma Factory project offers the possibility of creating novel re- search tools by producing relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in CERN’s accelerator complex and exciting their atomic degrees of freedom by lasers to produce strongly collimated high-energy photon beams. Inten- sity of such beams would exceed by several orders of magnitude the ones offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interest- ing energy domain from about 100 keV to above 400 MeV. The Gamma Factory (GF) initiative proposes to use partially stripped ion (PSI) beams as drivers of a new type of high-intensity and high-energy (0.1–400 MeV) photon source. As part of the ongoing Physics Beyond Collider studies, initial beam tests were carried out in 2017 and 2018 at the SPS and LHC with partially stripped xenon and lead beams [...]

Experimental study of extended timescale dynamics of a plasma wakefield driven by a self-modulated proton bunch / AWAKE Collaboration
Plasma wakefield dynamics over timescales up to 800 ps, approximately 100 plasma periods, are studied experimentally at the Advanced Wakefield Experiment (AWAKE). The development of the longitudinal wakefield amplitude driven by a self-modulated proton bunch is measured using the external injection of witness electrons that sample the fields. [...]

Betatron radiation diagnostics for AWAKE Run 2 / Williamson, B (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Xia, G (Manchester U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Gessner, S (CERN) ; Petrenko, A (CERN ; Novosibirsk, IYF) ; Farmer, J (Munich, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN) ; Pukhov, A (Heinrich Heine U., Dusseldorf)
AWAKE Run 2 aims to preserve the transverse normalised emittance of an externally injected electron beam throughout acceleration, requiring a new diagnostic to measure the beam emittance after the accelerating plasma stage. Spectroscopy of the betatron emission from the electron beam could be suitable for this case. [...]

New measurements of the stripping cross-section for ultrarelativistic hydrogen-like lead ions passing through aluminium and silicon have been performed at the Advanced Wakefield experiment at CERN. Agreement with existing measurements and theory has been obtained. [...]
