/ Szczepanek, Natalia Diana (CERN) ; Giordano, Domenico (CERN) ; Di Girolamo, Alessandro (CERN) ; Glushkov, Ivan (Brookhaven National Laboratory (US)) ; Menendez Borge, Gonzalo ; Lory, Alexander (Ludwig Maximilians Universitat (DE)) ; Vukotic, Ilija (University of Chicago (US))
/ATLAS Collaboration
In April 2023 HEPScore23, the new benchmark based on HEP specific applications, was adopted by WLCG, replacing HEP-SPEC06. As part of the transition to the new benchmark, the CPU core power published by the sites needed to be compared with the effective power observed while running ATLAS workloads. [...]

HEPScore: A new CPU benchmark for the WLCG
/ Giordano, Domenico (CERN) ; Barbet, Jean-Michel (SUBATECH, Nantes) ; Boccali, Tommaso (INFN, Pisa) ; Borge, Gonzalo Menéndez (CERN) ; Hollowell, Christopher (Brookhaven) ; Innocente, Vincenzo (CERN) ; Lampl, Walter (Arizona U.) ; Michelotto, Michele (INFN, Padua) ; Meinhard, Helge (CERN) ; Ondris, Ladislav (CERN) et al.
HEPScore is a new CPU benchmark created to replace the HEPSPEC06 benchmark that is currently used by the WLCG for procurement, computing resource pledges and performance studies. The development of the new benchmark, based on HEP applications or workloads, has involved many contributions from software developers, data analysts, experts of the experiments, representatives of several WLCG computing centres, as well as the WLCG HEPScore Deployment Task Force. Anomaly detection in the CERN cloud infrastructure
/ Giordano, Domenico (CERN) ; Paltenghi, Matteo (CERN) ; Metaj, Stiven (CERN) ; Dvorak, Antonin (Prague, Inst. Phys.)
Anomaly detection in the CERN OpenStack cloud is a challenging task due to the large scale of the computing infrastructure and, consequently, the large volume of monitoring data to analyse. The current solution to spot anomalous servers in the cloud infrastructure relies on a threshold-based alarming system carefully set by the system managers on the performance metrics of each infrastructure’s component. Exploitation of HPC Resources for data intensive sciences

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will enter a new phase beginning in 2027 with the upgrade to the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). The increase in the number of simultaneous collisions coupled with a more complex structure of a single event will result in each LHC experiment collecting, storing, and processing exabytes of data per year. Preparing Distributed Computing Operations for the HL-LHC Era With Operational Intelligence
/ Di Girolamo, Alessandro (CERN) ; Legger, Federica (INFN, Turin) ; Paparrigopoulos, Panos (CERN) ; Schovancová, Jaroslava (CERN) ; Beermann, Thomas (Wuppertal U.) ; Boehler, Michael (Freiburg U.) ; Bonacorsi, Daniele (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Clissa, Luca (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Decker de Sousa, Leticia (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Diotalevi, Tommaso (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) et al.
As a joint effort from various communities involved in the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, the Operational Intelligence project aims at increasing the level of automation in computing operations and reducing human interventions. The distributed computing systems currently deployed by the LHC experiments have proven to be mature and capable of meeting the experiment goals, by allowing timely delivery of scientific results. New developments in cost modeling for the LHC computing
/ Biscarat, Catherine (LPSC, Grenoble) ; Boccali, Tommaso (INFN, Pisa) ; Bonacorsi, Daniele (INFN, Bologna) ; Bozzi, Concezio (CERN ; Ferrara U.) ; Costanzo, Davide (Sheffield U.) ; Duellmann, Dirk (CERN) ; Elmsheuser, Johannes (Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Fede, Eric (CC, Villeurbanne) ; Flix Molina, José (Madrid, CIEMAT) ; Giordano, Domenico (CERN) et al.
The increase in the scale of LHC computing during Run 3 and Run 4 (HL-LHC) will certainly require radical changes to the computing models and the data processing of the LHC experiments. The working group established by WLCG and the HEP Software Foundation to investigate all aspects of the cost of computing and how to optimise them has continued producing results and improving our understanding of this process.
