Architectural Considerations for Recirculated and Energy-Recovered Hard XFEL Drivers
/ Douglas, David (Jefferson Lab) ; Angal-Kalinin, Deepa (Daresbury ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Benson, Stephen (Jefferson Lab) ; Charles, Tessa (CERN) ; Powers, Tom (Jefferson Lab) ; Roblin, Yves (Jefferson Lab) ; Satogata, Todd (Jefferson Lab) ; Tennant, Chris (Jefferson Lab) ; Thompson, Neil (Daresbury ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Wheelhouse, Alan (Daresbury ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) et al.
A confluence of events motivates discussion of design options for hard XFEL driver accelerators. Firstly, multiple superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) driven systems are now online (European XFEL), in construction (LCLS-II), or in design (MARIE); these provide increasing evidence of the transformational potential they offer for fundamental science with its concomitant benefits. PERLE - Lattice Design and Beam Dynamics Studies
/ Bogacz, Alex (Jefferson Lab) ; Angal-Kalinin, Deepa (Daresbury) ; Arduini, Gianluigi (CERN) ; Bousson, Sébastien (Orsay, IPN) ; Brüning, Oliver (CERN) ; Calaga, Rama (CERN) ; Chaikovska, Iryna (Orsay, LAL) ; Douglas, David (Jefferson Lab) ; Dr Schirm, Karl-Martin (CERN) ; Gerigk, Frank (CERN) et al.
PERLE (Powerful ERL for Experiments) is a novel ERL test facility, initially proposed to validate choices for a 60 GeV ERL foreseen in the design of the LHeC and the FCC-eh. Its main thrust is to probe high current, CW, multi-pass operation with superconducting cavities at 802 MHz (and perhaps testing other frequencies of interest). [...]

Suppression of Multipass, Multibunch Beam Breakup in Two Pass Recirculating Accelerators
/ Tennant, Chris ; Douglas, David ; Jordan, Kevin ; Merminga, Lia ; Pozdeyev, Eduard
Beam Breakup (BBU) occurs in all accelerators at sufficiently high currents. In recirculating accelerators, such as the energy recovery linacs used for high power FELs, the maximum current has historically been limited by multipass, multibunch BBU, a form that occurs when the electron beam interacts with the high order modes (HOMs) of an accelerating cavity on one pass and then again on the second pass. [...]

Longitudinal Space Charge Effects in the JLAB IR FEL SRF Linac
/ Hernandez-Garcia, Carlos ; Beard, Kevin ; Behre, Chris ; Benson, S V ; Herman-Biallas, George ; Boyce, James ; Douglas, David ; Dylla, Fred ; Evans, Richard ; Grippo, A et al.
Observations of energy spread asymmetry when operating the Linac on either side of crest and longitudinal emittance growth have been confirmed by extending PARMELA simulations from the injector to the end of the first SRF Linac module. The asymmetry can be explained by the interaction of the accelerating electric field with that from longitudinal space charge effects within the electron bunch. [...]
