An Alternative Method for Thermal Plume–Induced Aerosol Release and Deposition Calculations in Large Geometries Using fireFoam / Plagge, Michael (KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Krause, Ulrich ; Da Riva, Enrico ; Schäfer, Christoph ; Forkel-Wirth, Doris (CERN)
Being a particle physics laboratory, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) plans, constructs, and maintains installations emitting ionizing radiation during operation. Activation of present material is a consequence. [...]

The Thermosiphon Cooling System of the ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider / Battistin, M (CERN) ; Berry, S (CERN) ; Bitadze, A (Glasgow U.) ; Bonneau, P (CERN) ; Botelho-Direito, J (CERN) ; Boyd, G (Oklahoma U.) ; Corbaz, F (CERN) ; Crespo-Lopez, O (CERN) ; Da Riva, E (CERN) ; Degeorge, C (Indiana U.) et al.
The silicon tracker of the ATLAS experiment at CERN Large Hadron Collider will operate around –15°C to minimize the effects of radiation damage. The present cooling system is based on a conventional evaporative circuit, removing around 60 kW of heat dissipated by the silicon sensors and their local electronics. [...]

A Custom Online Ultrasonic Gas Mixture Analyzer With Simultaneous Flowmetry, Developed for the Upgraded Evaporative Cooling System of the ATLAS Silicon Tracker / Bates, R (Glasgow U.) ; Battistin, M ; Berry, S ; Berthoud, J ; Bitadze, A ; Bonneau, P ; Botelho-Direito, J ; Bousson, N ; Boyd, G ; Bozza, G et al.
We describe a combined ultrasonic instrument for continuous gas flow measurement and simultaneous real-time binary gas mixture analysis. In the instrument, sound bursts are transmitted in opposite directions, which may be aligned with the gas flow path or at an angle to it, the latter configuration being the best adapted to high flow rates. New solar axion search in CAST with $^4$He filling / CAST Collaboration
The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for $a\to\gamma$ conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the X-ray refractive mass $m_\gamma$ to the axion search mass $m_a$. [...]

Condensation in a Square Minichannel: Application of the VOF Method / Bortolin, V (U. Padua (main)) ; Da Riva, Enrico (CERN) ; Del Col, Davide (U. Padua (main))
A number of steady-state numerical simulations of condensation of R134a at mass fluxes of 400 kg m−2 s−1 and 800 kg m−2 s−1 inside a 1-mm square cross section minichannel are proposed here and compared against simulations in a circular cross section channel with the same hydraulic diameter. The volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to track the vapor–liquid interface, and the effects of interfacial shear stress, surface tension, and gravity are taken into account. [...]

Implementation of Ultrasonic Sensing for High Resolution Measurement of Binary Gas Mixture Fractions / Bates, Richard (Glasgow U.) ; Battistin, Michele (CERN) ; Berry, Stephane (CERN) ; Bitadze, Alexander (Glasgow U.) ; Bonneau, Pierre (CERN) ; Bousson, Nicolas (Marseille, CPPM) ; Boyd, George (Oklahoma U.) ; Bozza, Gennaro (CERN) ; Crespo-Lopez, Olivier (CERN) ; Da Riva, Enrico (CERN) et al.
We describe an ultrasonic instrument for continuous real-time analysis of the fractional mixture of a binary gas system. The instrument is particularly well suited to measurement of leaks of a high molecular weight gas into a system that is nominally composed of a single gas. [...]

Search for Solar Axions by the CERN Axion Solar Telescope with 3 He Buffer Gas: Closing the Hot Dark Matter Gap / CAST collaboration
The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has finished its search for solar axions with 3^He buffer gas, covering the search range 0.64 eV < m_a <1.17 eV. This closes the gap to the cosmological hot dark matter limit and actually overlaps with it. [...]
