This contribution presents a novel single-moderator neutron spectrometer, named “TetraBall”, developed at INFN and optimized for characterizing the neutron field in the CMS experimental cavern. The TetraBall condenses the functionality of several Bonner Spheres (BS) in a single moderator and it is equipped with 42 SiC radiation-hard detectors organized in a tetrahedral geometry designed to be insensitive to incident gammas and charged particles. The proximity of the accelerator to the patient, the presence of an active pencil beam delivery system downstream of a passive energy degrader and the pulsed structure of the beam make the Mevion stray neutron field unique amongst proton therapy facilities.
