Recent beam performance achievements with the Pb-ion beam in the SPS for LHC physics runs / Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Argyropoulos, Theodoros (CERN) ; Bohl, Thomas (CERN) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN) ; Saá Hernández, Angela (CERN) ; Shaposhnikova, Elena (CERN)
In the SPS, which is the last accelerator in the LHC ion injector chain, multiple injections of the Pb-ion beam have to be accumulated. On this injection plateau the beam suffers from considerable degradation such as emittance growth and losses. [...]

Crab cavities are a critical component within the High Luminosity upgrade project for the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). It is foreseen to use crab cavities in order to compensate the geometric luminosity reduction factor (reduction of the luminous region at the Interaction Point [IP]) due to the beam crossing angle (required for minimizing the impact of the long range beam-beam effects on the single particle beam dynamics) and increase the number of collisions per bunch crossing. The Gamma Factory initiative proposes to use partially stripped ion (PSI) beams as drivers of a new type of high intensity photon source. As part of the ongoing Physics Beyond Collider studies, initial beam tests with PSI beams have been executed at CERN. [...]

Machine protection experience from beam tests with crab cavity prototypes in the CERN SPS / Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN ; Uppsala U. Crab cavities (CCs) constitute a key component of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. In case of a failure, they can induce significant transverse beam offsets within tens of microseconds, necessitating a fast removal of the circulating beam to avoid damage to accelerator components due to losses from the displaced beam halo. [...]

Momentum slip-stacking in CERN SPS for the ion beams / Argyropoulos, Theodoros (CERN) ; Bohl, Thomas (CERN) ; Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Quartullo, Danilo (CERN) ; Shaposhnikova, Elena (CERN)
The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project at CERN aims at doubling the total intensity of the lead ion beam for the High-Luminosity (HL) LHC. Achieving this goal requires using momentum slip-stacking in the SPS, the LHC injector. [...]

The HL-LHC prototype crab-cavities are installed in the CERN SPS, which, for the first time, will allow for a comprehensive beam test with high energy protons. As the time available for experimental beam dynamics studies with the crab cavities installed in the machine will be limited, a very good preparation is required. [...]

First Xenon-Xenon Collisions in the LHC / Schaumann, Michaela (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Baudrenghien, Philippe (CERN) ; Bohl, Thomas (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Fuster-Martínez, Nuria (CERN) ; Jebramcik, Marc (CERN) ; Jowett, John (CERN) ; Mertens, Tom (CERN) et al.
In 2017, the CERN accelerator complex once again demonstrated its flexibility by producing beams of a new ion species, xenon, that were successfully injected into LHC. On 12 October, collisions of fully stripped xenon nuclei were recorded for the first time in the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy per colliding nucleon pair of 5.44 TeV. [...]

Lifetime and Beam Losses Studies of Partially Strip Ions in the SPS ($^{129}$Xe$^{39+}$) / Hirlaender, Simon (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Bohl, Thomas (CERN) ; Cettour Cave, Stephane (CERN) ; Cornellis, Karel (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Krasny, Mieczyslaw (Paris U., VI-VII ; Paris, IN2P3 ; CERN) et al.
The CERN multipurpose Gamma Factory proposal relies on using Partially Stripped Ion (PSI) beams, instead of electron beams, as the drivers of its light source. If such beams could be successfully stored in the LHC ring, fluxes of the order of $10^{17}$ photons/s, in the $\gamma$-ray energy domain of $1 \leq \rm{E}_{\gamma} \leq 400$ MeV could be achieved. [...]
