Very-High-Energy Heavy Ion Beam Dosimetry Using Solid State Detectors for Electronics Testing / Waets, Andreas (CERN ; Zurich U.) ; Bilko, Kacper (CERN) ; Coronetti, Andrea (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Sacristan Barbero, Mario (CERN) ; García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Durante, Marco (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Schuy, Christoph (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Wagner, Tim (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) et al.
Very-high-energy (VHE), heavy ions are of particular interest for single event effects (SEEs) testing due to their combination of high linear energy transfer (LET) and high penetration within electronics components. The dosimetry of such beams poses an important challenge for facilities aiming to provide VHE ions for radiation effects testing. [...]

Characterization of Fragmented Ultrahigh-Energy Heavy Ion Beam and Its Effects on Electronics Single-Event Effect Testing / Barbero, Mario Sacristán (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Slipukhin, Ivan (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Cecchetto, Matteo (CERN) ; Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Aguiar, Ygor (CERN) ; Bilko, Kacper (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Coronetti, Andrea (CERN) ; Kastriotou, Maria (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) et al.
Ultrahigh-energy (UHE) (>5 GeV/n) heavy ion beams exhibit different properties when compared to standard and high-energy ion beams. Most notably, fragmentation is a fundamental feature of the beam that may have important implications for electronics testing given the ultrahigh energies and, hence, ranges, preserved by the fragments. Fragmented High-Energy Heavy-Ion Beams for Electronics Testing / García Alía, Rubén (CERN) ; Bilko, Kacper (CERN ; Lab. Hubert Curien, St. Etienne) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Coronetti, Andrea (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi (CERN) ; Pujol, Francesc Salvat (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN ; U. Zurich (main)) ; Girard, Sylvain (Lab. Hubert Curien, St. Etienne) ; Saigné, Frédéric (IES, Montpellier) et al.
Fragmented heavy-ion beams obtained from the interaction of highly energetic ions with thick targets relative to the ion ranges are proposed to mimic the high-penetration linear energy transfer (LET) spectrum present in space and for electronics testing. Our experimental data characterizing fragmented heavy-ion beams show an excellent level of agreement with the Monte Carlo simulations, serving as an initial proofof-concept of the proposed single-event effect (SEE) testing approach..

Feasibility of Slow-Extracted High-Energy Ions From the CERN Proton Synchrotron for CHARM / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Delrieux, Marc (CERN) ; Duraffourg, Michel (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) et al.
The CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) working group at CERN is investigating the feasibility of delivering high energy ion beams to the CHARM facility for the study of radiation effects to electronics components engineered to operate in harsh radiation environments, such as space or high-energy accelerators. The Proton Synchrotron has the potential of delivering the required high energy and high-Z (in this case, Pb) ions for radiation tests over the relevant range of Linear Energy Transfer of ~ 10 - 40 MeV cm²/mg with a > 1 mm penetration depth in silicon, specifically for single event effect tests. Benchmarks of Energy Deposition Studies for Heavy-Ion Collimation Losses at the LHC / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frederic (IES, Montpellier)
During some periods in its second physics run (2015-2018), the LHC has been operated with 208Pb⁸²⁺ ion beams at an energy of 6.37 ZTeV. The LHC is equipped with a betatron collimation system, which intercepts the transverse beam halo and protects sensitive equipment such as superconducting magnets against beam losses. [...]

Power Deposition Studies for Crystal-Based Heavy Ion Collimation in the LHC / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frederic (IES, Montpellier)
The LHC heavy-ion program with 208Pb⁸²⁺ beams is foreseen to benefit from a significant intensity upgrade in 2022. A performance limitation may arise from ion fragments scattered out of the collimators in the betatron cleaning insertion, which risk quenching superconducting magnets during periods of short beam lifetime. Risk of Halo-Induced Magnet Quenches in the HL-LHC Beam Dump Insertion / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; Montpellier U.) ; Apollonio, Andrea (CERN) ; Belli, Eleonora (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN) et al.
After the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade, the LHC will be exposed to a higher risk of magnet quenches during periods of short beam lifetime. Collimators in the extraction region (IR6) assure the protection of magnets against asynchronous beam dumps, but they also intercept a fraction of the beam halo leaking from the betatron cleaning insertion. Power Deposition in Superconducting Dispersion Suppressor Magnets Downstream of the Betatron Cleaning Insertion for HL-LHC / Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Bahamonde Castro, Cristina (CERN) ; Belli, Eleonora (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Fuster-Martínez, Nuria (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Sabaté-Gilarte, Marta (CERN) ; Skordis, Eleftherios (CERN)
The power deposited in dispersion suppressor magnets downstream of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) betatron cleaning insertion is governed by off-momentum particles scattered out of the primary collimators. In order to mitigate the risk of magnet quenches during periods of short beam lifetime in future High-Luminosity (HL-LHC) operation, new dispersion suppressor (DS) collimators are considered for installation (one per beam).
