Improvements of the SPS slow extraction electrostatic septum / Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Prost, Antoine (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Pirozzi, Fabrizio (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Kawa, Krzysztof (CERN ; AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Jorat, Louise Olivia (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Roudaut, Noah (CERN ; UTBM, Belfort)
The impact of high-flux protons on the inherent beam loss in the slow extraction straight from SPS towards the North Area has been recently discussed and potential improvements have been proposed. These solutions are mainly aiming to reduce the high component activation and related reduction of lifetime, as well as observed non-straightness in the anode body. [...]

A Combined Testing and Modelling Methodology for the Mechanics of High-Field Superconducting Magnets / Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Holko, Michal (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Masci, Marco (CERN) ; de Frutos, Oscar Sacristan (CERN) ; Savary, Frédéric (CERN) ; Wolf, Felix (CERN)
The use of superconducting composite cables based on Nb3Sn, an intermetallic compound of Niobium and Tin, is one of the favorite routes to reach magnetic fields higher than 10 T in state-of-the-art accelerator magnets. The brittle and nonlinear nature of the epoxy-impregnated Nb3Sn Rutherford cable makes challenging to predict its mechanical limits and, consequently, the overall performance of the magnet. [...]

Design optimization of the water-cooled coil for the LEIR extraction septum / Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Motschmann, Fritz (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Atanasov, Miroslav (CERN) ; Masson, Thierry (CERN) ; Erends, Vera (Utrecht U.)
A pulsed septum magnet (SMH40) is used for heavy ion extraction from the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR). A non-conformity on the coil cooling circuit made it necessary to consolidate the design of the septum blade and related manufacturing process. [...]

Mechanical Characterization of Nb3Sn Cable Insulation Systems Used for HL-LHC Accelerator Magnets at Ambient Temperature / Wolf, Felix (CERN) ; Foussat, Arnaud (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Sgobba, Stefano (CERN) ; Crouvizier, Mickael (CERN) ; Canfer, Simon (Daresbury) ; Robertson, Steve (Daresbury)
The performance of accelerator magnets is strongly relying on the dielectric strength and mechanical robustness of the insulation system. This is in particular relevant for the current development of high field superconducting Nb 3 Sn magnets with the insulation system made from resin-impregnated glass fibres. [...]

In the context of the Future Circular Collider hadron-hadron (FCC-hh) R&D; program, the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with CERN, is responsible for designing and constructing the Falcon Dipole (Future Accelerator post-LHC Costheta Optimized Nb₃Sn Dipole), which is an important step towards the construction of High Field Nb₃Sn magnets for a post LHC collider. The magnet is a short model with one aperture of 50 mm and the target bore field is 12 T (14 T ’ultimate’ field). [...]

The next generation particle accelerators will need to increase by an order of magnitude the center-of-mass energy: a viable solution is a 100 TeV circular collider, temporarily called Future Circular Collider (FCC). To achieve this goal, a new generation of double aperture superconducting magnets, capable of generating a high quality, stable 16 T magnetic field in a 50 mm bore is being developed. [...]

Progress in the Development of the Nb$_3$Sn MQXFB Quadrupole for the HiLumi Upgrade of the LHC / Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Apollinari, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Duarte Ramos, Delio (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (LBL, Berkeley) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Feher, Sandor (Fermilab) et al.
The high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires new high field and large-aperture quadrupole magnets for the low-beta inner triplets (MQXF). With a nominal operating gradient of 132.2 T/m in a 150 mm aperture and a conductor peak field of 11.3 T, the new quadrupole magnets are based on Nb3Sn superconducting technology. [...]

Thermomechanical Properties of Polymers for Use in Superconducting Magnets / Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Rehmer, Birgit (BAM, Berlin) ; Finn, Monika (BAM, Berlin) ; Meyer, Christian (BAM, Berlin) ; Uhlemann, Patrick (BAM, Berlin) ; Amez-Droz, Michel (Unlisted, CH) ; Meuter, Florian (CERN) ; Konstantopoulou, Konstantina (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN) et al.
The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the thermomechanical properties of the polymers used in superconducting magnets need to be known in order to predict their stress state under the different magnet assembly and operating conditions. We have measured Young's moduli of typically used polymers during in situ heat cycles with the dynamic resonance method. [...]
