Chapter 19: Injection and Beam Dump Systems / Bracco, C (CERN) ; Barnes, M J (CERN) ; Bartmann, W (CERN) ; Calviani, M (CERN) ; Perez, D Carbajo (CERN) ; Carlier, E (CERN) ; Ducimetiere, L (CERN) ; Frankl, M I (CERN) ; Goddard, B (CERN) ; Jowett, J (CERN) et al.
Some of the elements of the LHC injection and extraction systems will be upgraded or replaced to adapt to the increased beam brightness and intensity of the HL-LHC beams [1; 2]. The injection main protection absorber will be replaced with new hardware which will be able to absorb and withstand 288 HL-LHC bunches in case of an injection kicker failure. [...]

Dynamic Response of Advanced Materials Impacted by Particle Beams: The MultiMat Experiment / Pasquali, M (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Accettura, C (CERN ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Berthome, E (CERN) ; Bianchi, L (CERN) ; Bolz, P (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Carra, F (CERN) ; Fichera, C (BIAM, St Paul lez Durance) ; Frankl, M I (CERN) ; Furness, T (Huddersfield U.) et al.
The introduction at CERN of new extremely energetic particle accelerators, such as the high-luminosity large hadron collider (HL-LHC) or the proposed future circular collider (FCC), will increase the energy stored in the circulating particle beams by almost a factor of two (from 360 to 680 MJ) and of more than 20 (up to 8500 MJ), respectively. In this scenario, it is paramount to assess the dynamic thermomechanical response of materials presently used, or being developed for future use, in beam intercepting devices (such as collimators, targets, dumps, absorbers, spoilers, windows, etc.) exposed to potentially destructive events caused by the impact of energetic particle beams. 3D Carbon/Carbon composites for beam intercepting devices at CERN / Nuiry, François-Xavier (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Bergeret, Maxime (CERN) ; Pianese, Stefano (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Grec, Lucian-Mircea (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias Immanuel (CERN) ; Maciariello, Fausto Lorenzo (ASML, San Diego) ; Pichon, Thierry (Ariane Group, Saint-Medard-en-Jalles)
3D Carbon/Carbon (3D CC) is a well‐known industrial composite material for high‐temperature applications. One of its main advantages resides in its ability to maintain good material characteristics at elevated temperatures (higher than 2700°C), which makes it potentially interesting for beam interaction applications where high strength at high temperature is required. Operational limits from intercepting devices / Bracco, C (CERN) ; Bartmann, W (CERN) ; Calviani, M (CERN) ; Frankl, M I (CERN) ; Fraser, M A (CERN) ; Gilardoni, S (CERN) ; Goddard, B (CERN) ; Kain, V (CERN) ; Lechner, A (CERN) ; Marcone, A Perillo (CERN) et al.
LHC operation in 2016 was limited by the constraints on the maximum allowed intensity in the SPS due to the vacuum leak at the internal dump. The present baseline foresees the replacement of the T1DVG with a new upgraded hardware during the upcoming EYETS. [...]
