Multiplicity distributions inside parton cascades developing in a medium
/ Borghini, Nicolas (CERN)
The explanation of the suppression of high-pT hadron yields at RHIC in terms of jet-quenching implies that the multiplicity distributions of particles inside a jet and jet-like particle correlations differ strongly in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC or at the LHC from those observed at e+e- or hadron colliders. We present a framework for describing the medium-induced modification, which has a direct interpretation in terms of a probabilistic medium-modified parton cascade, and which treats leading and subleading partons on an equal footing. Distribution of multiple scatterings in proton-nucleus collisions at high energy
/ Borghini, Nicolas (CERN) ; Gelis, Francois (Saclay, SPhT)
We consider proton-nucleus collisions at high energy in the Color Glass Condensate framework, and extract from the gluon production cross-section the probabilities of having a definite number of multiple scatterings in the nucleus. Various properties of the distribution of the number of multiple scatterings are studied, and we conclude that events in which the momentum of a hard jet is compensated by many much softer particles on the opposite side are very unlikely except for extreme values of the saturation momentum. Multiplicity distributions for jet parton showers in a medium
/ Borghini, Nicolas (CERN) ; Wiedemann, Urs Achim (CERN ; Bielefeld U.)
The jet-quenching interpretation of suppressed high-pT hadron production at RHIC implies that jet multiplicity distributions and jet-like particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC differ strongly from those seen at e+e- or pp colliders. Here, we present an approach for describing the changes induced by the medium, which implements jet quenching as a probabilistic medium-modified parton shower, treating leading and subleading parton splittings on an equal footing. Elliptic flow and incomplete equilibration at RHIC
/ Bhalerao, R.S. (Tata Inst.) ; Blaizot, Jean-Paul (ECT, Trento) ; Borghini, Nicolas (CERN) ; Ollitrault, Jean-Yves (Saclay, SPhT)
We argue that RHIC data, in particular those on the anisotropic flow coefficients v_2 and v_4, suggest that the matter produced in the early stages of nucleus-nucleus collisions is incompletely thermalized. We interpret the parameter (1/S)(dN/dy), where S is the transverse area of the collision zone and dN/dy the multiplicity density, as an indicator of the number of collisions per particle at the time when elliptic flow is established, and hence as a measure of the degree of equilibration.
