Measurement of the emittance of accelerated electron bunches at the AWAKE experiment / AWAKE Collaboration
The vertical plane transverse emittance of accelerated electron bunches at the AWAKE experiment at CERN has been determined, using three different methods of data analysis. [...]

Experimental observation of the motion of ions in a resonantly driven plasma wakefield accelerator / AWAKE Collaboration
We show experimentally that an effect of motion of ions, observed in a plasma-based accelerator, depends inversely on the plasma ion mass. The effect appears within a single wakefield event and manifests itself as a bunch tail, occurring only when sufficient motion of ions suppresses wakefields. [...]

Investigations of losses on the CERN SPS flat bottom with HL-LHC type beams / Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Demetriadou, Despina (CERN) ; Vinten, Evin (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Karpov, Ivan (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Vadai, Mihaly (CERN) et al.
The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project at CERN aims at doubling the beam intensity and the brightness. To achieve this unprecedented performance, the LHC injectors were upgraded during the Long Shutdown 2 (2019-2021) to overcome limitations such as space charge and beam instabilities. [...]

Hosing of a long relativistic particle bunch in plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, self-modulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies close to the plasma electron frequency, and are reproducible. [...]

Filamentation of a Relativistic Proton Bunch in Plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
We show in experiments that a long, underdense, relativistic proton bunch propagating in plasma undergoes the oblique instability, that we observe as filamentation. We determine a threshold value for the ratio between the bunch transverse size and plasma skin depth for the instability to occur. [...]

Development of the Self-Modulation Instability of a Relativistic Proton Bunch in Plasma / AWAKE Collaboration
Self-modulation is a beam-plasma instability that is useful to drive large-amplitude wakefields with bunches much longer than the plasma skin depth. We present experimental results showing that, when increasing the ratio between the initial transverse size of the bunch and the plasma skin depth, the instability occurs later along the bunch, or not at all, over a fixed plasma length, because the amplitude of the initial wakefields decreases. [...]

This article presents the design, construction, and high-power test of two X -band radio frequency (RF) accelerating structures built as part of a collaboration between CERN and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) for the compact linear collider (CLIC) study. The structures are a modified “tuning-free” variant of an existing CERN design and were assembled using Swiss free electron laser (SwissFEL) production methods. [...]

Improved Longitudinal Performance of the LHC Beam in the CERN PS / Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Desquiens, Valentin (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Jibar, Azeddine (CERN) ; Lasheen, Alexandre (CERN) ; Mikulec, Bettina (CERN) ; Morvillo, Michele (CERN) ; Rossi, Carlo (CERN) ; Woolley, Benjamin (CERN)
At the end of the 2018 run the intensity target for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) had just been reached at extraction from the Proton Synchrotron (PS). In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project additional RF improvements have been implemented during the 2019/2020 long shutdown (LS2), mainly impacting the impedance of the 10 MHz, 40 MHz, and 80 MHz RF systems.
