Radiological characterisation for the clearance of burnable waste produced at CERN / Harbron, Richard (CERN) ; Charousset, Renaud (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Giunio Pisano, Paolo (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN)
Burnable waste produced at CERN during upgrading, maintenance and dismantling campaigns may be contaminated with radioactive nuclides produced through activation of accelerator components. Here, we present a methodology for the radiological characterisation of burnable waste, which takes into account the wide range of potential activation conditions (beam energy, material composition, location, irradiation and waiting time). CERN-MEDICIS: A Review Since Commissioning in 2017 / MEDICIS Collaboration
The CERN-MEDICIS (MEDical Isotopes Collected from ISolde) facility has delivered its first radioactive ion beam at CERN (Switzerland) in December 2017 to support the research and development in nuclear medicine using non-conventional radionuclides. Since then, fourteen institutes, including CERN, have joined the collaboration to drive the scientific program of this unique installation and evaluate the needs of the community to improve the research in imaging, diagnostics, radiation therapy and personalized medicine. Spectrum and Yield to Dose Conversion Coefficients for Beta Skin Doses Linked to the Q System / Frosio, Thomas (CERN) ; Bertreix, Philippe (CERN) ; Köster, Ulli (Laue-Langevin Inst.) ; Theis, Christian (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN)
Monte Carlo simulations are a state-of-the-art method to calculate dose coefficients and could be used with the Q system for radioactive material packaging. These simulations often take a long time to converge with sufficient precision. [...]

Modelling the Radioactivity Induced by Slow-Extraction Losses in the CERN SPS / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Björkman, Daniel (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Schicho, Philipp (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
Resonant slow extraction is used to provide an intense quasi-DC flux of high-energy protons for the Fixed Target (FT) physics programme at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The unavoidable beam loss intrinsic to the extraction process activates the extraction region and its equipment. [...]

How to Manage a Large Scale Beam Line Consolidation in a Highly Activated Area? / Evrard, Sebastien (CERN) ; Grenard, Jean-Louis (CERN) ; Harrouch, Erwan (CERN) ; Herve, Angelito (CERN) ; Pardons, Ans (CERN) ; Pira, Yann (CERN) ; Seraphin, Yann (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
The TDC2/TCC2 consolidation is a good example showing how the complexity of interventions in high radiation areas has increased over the last five years. Due to its duration, its dispersion, the diversity of the teams involved, the fixed deadlines, the risks and external constraints, this worksite prefigures large scale-interventions in the LHC during long shutdown 2 (LS2) and even more LS3. ActiWiz – optimizing your nuclide inventory at proton accelerators with a computer code / Vincke, Helmut (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN)
When operating an accelerator one always faces unwanted, but inevitable beam losses. These result in activation of adjacent material, which in turn has an obvious impact on safety and handling constraints. [...]

Performance and limits of KNN-based positioning methods for GSM networks over leaky feeder in underground tunnels / Pereira, Fernando (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN) ; Moreira, Adriano (Minho U.) ; Ricardo, Manuel (Porto U.)
Localisation techniques have long been of major importance for safety systems and a lot of research has been conducted in the distributed computing field regarding its functionality and reliability. In the specific scenario of long yet narrow tunnels existing at CERN, localisation methods will enable a number of applications and processes to substantially reduce human intervention. [...]

This paper gives a brief overview of the general principles of radiation protection legislation; explains radiological quantities and units, including some basic facts about radioactivity and the biological effects of radiation; and gives an overview of the classification of radiological areas at CERN, radiation fields at high-energy accelerators, and the radiation monitoring system used at CERN. A short section addresses the ALARA approach used at CERN..
