Neutron Capture on the $s$-Process Branching Point $^{171}$Tm via Time-of-Flight and Activation / n_TOF Collaboration
The neutron capture cross sections of several unstable nuclides acting as branching points in the s process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies. The unstable Tm171 (t1/2=1.92  yr) is part of the branching around mass A∼170 but its neutron capture cross section as a function of the neutron energy is not known to date. [...]

LHC injection losses for tighter collimator settings in view of HE-LHC / Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Crouch, Matthew Paul ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Molson, James (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
In view of the smaller physical apertures of Nb3Sn magnets for the HE-LHC study, a machine study was performed in the LHC to tighten correspondingly the ring and injection protection collimators and measure the change in loss behaviour. [...]

Positron production using a 9 MeV electron linac for the GBAR experiment / Charlton, M. (Swansea U.) ; Choi, J.J. (Seoul Natl. U., Dept. Phys. Astron.) ; Chung, M. (UNIST, Ulsan) ; Cladé, P. (Paris, Lab. Kastler Brossel) ; Comini, P. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Crépin, P.P. (Paris, Lab. Kastler Brossel) ; Crivelli, P. (Zurich, ETH) ; Dalkarov, O. (Lebedev Inst.) ; Debu, P. (IRFU, Saclay) ; Dodd, L. (Swansea U.) et al.
For the GBAR (Gravitational Behaviour of Antihydrogen at Rest) experiment at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility we have constructed a source of slow positrons, which uses a low-energy electron linear accelerator (linac). The driver linac produces electrons of 9 MeV kinetic energy that create positrons from bremsstrahlung-induced pair production. [...]

There is now solid experimental evidence of at least one supernova explosion within 100 pc of Earth within the last few million years, from measurements of the short-lived isotope 60Fe in widespread deep-ocean samples, as well as in the lunar regolith and cosmic rays. [...]

The knowledge of the neutron capture cross sections of s-process branching point isotopes represents a basic requirement for the understanding of star evolution. Since such branching point isotopes are by definition radioactive, the measurement of their cross sections from thermal to stellar energies becomes a challenging task. [...]
