The Interaction of Neutrons with 7Be at BBN Temperatures: Lack of Standard Nuclear Solution to the “Primordial 7Li Problem” / Gai, M (Connecticut U. LNS Avery Point Groton) ; Kading, E E (Connecticut U. LNS Avery Point Groton) ; Hass, M (Weizmann Inst.) ; Nollett, K M (San Diego State U.) ; Stern, S R (Connecticut U. LNS Avery Point Groton) ; Stora, Th (CERN) ; Weiss, A (Bar Ilan U. ; Hebrew U.)
We report the first measurement of alpha-particles from the interaction of neutrons with 7Be at “temperatures” of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). We measured the Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS), with neutron beams produced by the LiLiT at the SARAF in Israel (with kT = 49.5 keV hence 0.57 GK). [...]

Electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes: Coulomb excitation of $^{182}$Hg, $^{184}$Hg, $^{186}$Hg and $^{188}$Hg / Wrzosek-Lipska, K (Warsaw U., Heavy Ion Lab ; Leuven U.) ; Rezynkina, K (Leuven U. ; U. Strasbourg) ; Bree, N (Leuven U.) ; Zielińska, M (Warsaw U., Heavy Ion Lab ; IRFU, Saclay) ; Gaffney, L P (Liverpool U. ; Leuven U. ; CERN ; West Scotland U.) ; Petts, A (Liverpool U.) ; Andreyev, A (Leuven U. ; York U., England) ; Bastin, B (Leuven U. ; GANIL) ; Bender, M (Lyon, IPN) ; Blazhev, A (Cologne U.) et al.
The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass $^{182-188}$ Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The progress within atomic and nuclear physics relies on refining and adding new observables. One of these is the polarization of the nuclear spin, where there is a manifest interest in accessing a wide variety of polarized beams, e.g. [...]

Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85  MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. [...]

``Beta beams'' produce collimated pure electron (anti)neutrino beams by accelerating beta active ions to high energies and having them decay in a racetrack shaped storage ring of 7 km circumference, the decay ring. EUROnu beta beams are based on CERN infrastructures and existing machines. [...]

Background: Shape coexistence in heavy nuclei poses a strong challenge to state-of-the-art nuclear models, where several competing shape minima are found close to the ground state. A classic region for investigating this phenomenon is in the region around $Z=82$ and the neutron mid-shell at $N=104$. [...]

The tilted-foils nuclear-spin polarization method has been evaluated using the REX-ISOLDE linear accelerator at the ISOLDE facility, CERN. A beam of Li-8 delivered with an energy of 300 keV/u traversed through one Mylar foil to degrade the beam energy to 200 keV/u and consequently through 10 thin diamond-like carbon foils to polarize the nuclear spin.
