High intensity proton beam impact at 440 GeV/c on Mo and Cu coated CfC/graphite and SiC/SiC absorbers for beam intercepting devices / Maestre, Jorge (CERN ; Granada U.) ; Bahamonde, Cristina (CERN) ; Garcia, Inigo Lamas (CERN) ; Kershaw, Keith (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Busom, Josep (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias (CERN ; PSI, Villigen) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Kurtulus, Adnan (CERN) ; Makimura, Shunsuke (J-PARC ; KEK, Tsukuba) et al.
Beam Intercepting Devices (BIDs) are essential protection elements for the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) complex. The LHC internal beam dump (LHC Target Dump Injection or LHC TDI) is the main protection BID of the LHC injection system; its main function is to protect LHC equipment in the event of a malfunction of the injection kicker magnets during beam transfer from the SPS to the LHC. Machine protection aspects of high-voltage flashovers of the LHC beam dump dilution kickers / Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) et al.
The LHC Beam Dump System is required to safely dispose of the energy of the stored beam. In order to reduce the energy density deposited in the beam dump, a dedicated dilution system is installed. [...]

3D Carbon/Carbon composites for beam intercepting devices at CERN / Nuiry, François-Xavier (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Bergeret, Maxime (CERN) ; Pianese, Stefano (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Grec, Lucian-Mircea (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias Immanuel (CERN) ; Maciariello, Fausto Lorenzo (ASML, San Diego) ; Pichon, Thierry (Ariane Group, Saint-Medard-en-Jalles)
3D Carbon/Carbon (3D CC) is a well‐known industrial composite material for high‐temperature applications. One of its main advantages resides in its ability to maintain good material characteristics at elevated temperatures (higher than 2700°C), which makes it potentially interesting for beam interaction applications where high strength at high temperature is required. Asynchronous Beam Dump Tests at LHC / Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Heßler, Christoph (CERN) ; Kramer, Thomas (CERN) et al.
The detailed understanding of the beam-loss pattern in case of an asynchronous beam dump is essential for the safe operation of the future High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) with nearly twice the nominal LHC beam intensity, leading to correspondingly higher energy deposition on the protection elements. An asynchronous beam dump is provoked when the rise time of the extraction kickers is not synchronized to the 3 us long particle-free abort gap. [...]

Upgrade of the Dilution System for HL-LHC / Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Frankl, Matthias (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Gilardoni, Simone (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) et al.
The LHC Beam Dump System is one of the most critical systems for reliable and safe operation of the LHC. A dedicated dilution system is required to sweep the beam over the front face of the graphite dump core in order to reduce the deposited energy density. [...]

Energy Deposition Studies and Analysis of the Quench Behavior in the Case of Asynchronous Dumps During 6.5 TeV LHC Proton Beam Operation / Frankl, Matthias (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bednarek, Mateusz (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN) ; Wollmann, Daniel (CERN)
The CERN LHC beam dumping system comprises a series of septa and fast-pulsed kicker magnets for extracting the stored proton beams to the external beam dumps. Different absorbers in the extraction region protect superconducting magnets and other machine elements in case of abnormal beam aborts, where bunches are swept across the machine aperture. [...]

An innovative and comprehensive experiment (named “Multimat”) was successfully carried out at CERN HiRadMat facility on 18 different materials relevant for Collimators and Beam Intercepting Devices. Material samples, tested under high intensity proton pulses of 440 GeV/c, exceeding the energy density expected in HL-LHC, ranged from very light carbon foams to tungsten heavy alloys, including novel composites as graphite/carbides and metal/diamond without and with thin-film coatings.
