Effects of Cavity Pre-Detuning on RF Power Transients at Injection into the LHC
/ Karlsen-Bæck, Birk Emil (CERN ; Rome U.) ; Argyropoulos, Theodoros (CERN) ; Butterworth, Andrew (CERN) ; Calaga, Rama (CERN) ; Karpov, Ivan (CERN) ; Timko, Helga (CERN) ; Zampetakis, Michail (CERN)
At injection into the LHC, the RF system is perturbed by beam-induced voltage resulting in strong RF power transients and the instant detuning of the cavities. The automatic tuning system, however, needs time for the mechanical compensation of the resonance frequency to take place. [...]

The LHC RF cryomodule "Asia" suffered an accidental influx of about 0.5 l of tunnel air during the leak checks of the pumping manifolds. The resulting risk of particle contamination was difficult to assess, and could not be excluded with certainty. [...]

In 2021 the Super Proton Synchrotron has been recommissioned after a complete renovation of its low level RF system (LLRF). The new system has largely moved to digital signal processing implemented as a set of functional blocks (IP cores) in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) with associated software to control them. Operation Experience with the LHC ACS RF System

The LHC accelerating RF system consists of two cryomodules per beam, each containing four single-cell niobium sputtered 400.8 MHz superconducting cavities working at 4.5 K and an average accelerating voltage of 2 MV. The paper summarises the experience, availability and evolution of the system within 10 years of operation. [...]

Machine protection experience from beam tests with crab cavity prototypes in the CERN SPS
/ Lindstrom, Bjorn (CERN ; Uppsala U. (main)) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bohl, Thomas (CERN) ; Butterworth, Andrew (CERN) ; Calaga, Rama (CERN) ; Carver, Lee (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Levens, Thomas (CERN) ; Papotti, Giulia (CERN) ; Secondo, Raffaello (CERN) et al.
Crab cavities (CCs) constitute a key component of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. In case of a failure, they can induce significant transverse beam offsets within tens of microseconds, necessitating a fast removal of the circulating beam to avoid damage to accelerator components due to losses from the displaced beam halo. Usage of the Transverse Damper Observation Box for High Sampling Rate Transverse Position Data in the LHC

The transverse damper observation box (ADTObsBox) is a device that makes accessible the bunch-by-bunch turn-by-turn data recorded from the pickups of the LHC transverse damper. This device can provide online transient analysis of different beam dynamics effects (tunes and damping times at injection, for example), while also under development is an online coherent instability triggering system. Processing High-Bandwidth Bunch-by-Bunch Observation Data from the RF and Transverse Damper Systems of the LHC

The radiofrequency and transverse damper feedback systems of the Large Hadron Collider digitize beam phase and position measurements at the bunch repetition rate of 40 MHz. Embedded memory buffers allow a few milliseconds of full rate bunch-by-bunch data to be retrieved over the VME bus for diagnostic purposes, but experience during LHC Run I has shown that for beam studies much longer data records are desirable.
