U.) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Slipukhin, Ivan (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Lucsanyi, David (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Sandberg, Hampus (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Martin-Holgado, Pedro (CNA, Seville) ; Romero-Maestre, Amor (CNA, Seville) ; Morilla García, Yolanda (CNA, Seville) ; García Alía, Rubén (CERN)
A Timepix3 detector with a 300 silicon sensor has been studied as a novel radiation monitor for the mixed radiation field at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This work describes a test campaign carried out at Centro Nacional de Aceleradores with quasi-mono energetic protons (alphas) from 0.6 (1) to 5 (5.6) MeV, where orthogonal irradiations are used to obtain an energy calibration, and a low-energy angular scan to estimate the front dead layer thickness of the sensor. Matching Studies Between the CERN PSB and PS Using Turn-by-Turn Beam Profile Acquisitions with a Residual Beam Gas Ionisation Monitor
/ Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Coly, Marcel (CERN) ; Guerrero, Ana (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Jensen, Steen (CERN) ; Levasseur, Swann (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Rossi, Adriana (CERN) ; Sandberg, Hampus (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN)
In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade project, the Beam Gas Ionisation (BGI) profile monitors installed in the Proton Synchrotron (PS) were fitted with a gas injection system capable of boosting the signal rate high enough to capture single turn acquisitions immediately after injection. This contribution reports on the studies carried out during the beam commissioning of the BGI system in a turn-by-turn matching monitor mode for its eventual implementation in an optimisation framework to preserve emittance during transfer between the PS Booster and PS. Commissioning of Timepix3 Based Beam Gas Ionisation Profile Monitors for the CERN Proton Synchrotron
/ Sandberg, Hampus (CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (JAI, UK) ; Jensen, Steen (CERN) ; Levasseur, Swann (CERN) ; Satou, Kenichirou (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN)
A pair of operational Beam Gas Ionisation (BGI) profile monitors was installed in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) at the beginning of 2021. These instruments use Timepix3 hybrid pixel detectors to continuously measure the beam profile throughout the cycle in the horizontal and vertical planes. [...]

Commissioning the New CERN Beam Instrumentation Following the Upgrade of the LHC Injector Chain
/ Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Bart Pedersen, Stephane (CERN) ; Belleman, Jeroen (CERN) ; Belohrad, David (CERN) ; Bozzolan, Michele (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Di Carlo, Salvatore (CERN) ; Emery, Jonathan (CERN) ; Goldblatt, Aurélie (CERN) ; Guerrero, Ana (CERN) et al.
The LHC injectors Upgrade (LIU) program has been fully implemented during the second long shutdown (LS2), which took place in 2019-20. In this context, new or upgraded beam instrumentation was developed to cope with H⁻ beam in LINAC4 and the new Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) injection systems which would provide high brightness proton beams in the rest of the injector complex. Measuring the Beam Profile by Counting Ionization Electrons
/ Sandberg, Hampus (Manchester U. ; CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Manchester U.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Dehning, Bernd (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Levasseur, Swann (CERN) ; Satou, Kenichirou (J-PARC ; KEK, Tsukuba ; JAEA, Ibaraki) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Storey, James (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN)
The principle of non-destructive beam profile measurement with rest gas ionization electrons has remained largely unchanged since the technique was first proposed in the late 1960's. Ionization electrons (or ions) are transported by an electrostatic field onto an imaging detector, where the spatial distribution of detected electrons is a direct measure of the transverse beam profile. Time-Resolved Transverse Beam Profile Measurements with a Rest Gas Ionisation Profile Monitor Based on Hybrid Pixel Detectors
/ Levasseur, Swann (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Bertsche, William (U. Manchester (main)) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Sandberg, Hampus (U. A novel rest gas ionisation profile monitor which aims to provide continuous, bunch-by-bunch and turn-by-turn measurement of the transverse beam profile has recently been in- stalled in the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) as part of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project. The instrument consists of an electric drift field to transport ionisation electrons produced by beam-gas interaction onto a measurement plane, and a magnetic field to maintain the transverse position of the ionisation electrons. First Results From the Operation of a Rest Gas Ionisation Profile Monitor Based on a Hybrid Pixel Detector
/ Storey, James (CERN) ; Bertsche, William (Manchester U.) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) ; Dehning, Bernd (CERN) ; Gibson, Stephen (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Levasseur, Swann (Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Sandberg, Hampus (Manchester U.) ; Sapinski, Mariusz (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Satou, Kenichirou (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) et al.
A novel rest gas ionisation profile monitor which aims to provide a continuous non-destructive bunch-by-bunch measurement of the transverse emittance is currently under development for the CERN Proton Synchrotron (CPS). Uniquely for this type of instrument the imaging detector that measures the position of the ionisation electrons consists of an array of pixelated silicon sensors which are read-out using Timepix3 readout chips.
