The Extra Low ENergy Antiproton storage ring (ELENA) is an upgrade project at the CERN AD (Antiproton Decelerator). ELENA will further decelerate the 5.3 MeV antiprotons coming from the AD down to 100 keV. [...]

Large nuclear scattering effects in antiproton transmission through polymer and metal-coated foils / Nordlund, K (Helsinki U. ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Hori, Masaki (Hannover, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt. ; Munich U.) ; Sundholm, D (U. Helsinki (main))
We simulate the deceleration and transmission of antiprotons with keV-scale kinetic energies through polymer foils using a molecular dynamics approach, which includes a model of nuclear stopping based on the attractive interaction potentials between antiprotons and target atoms calculated by quantum chemical methods. Antiprotons scatter into larger angles with higher cross sections than protons. [...]

Commissioning of the SEM-Grid Monitors for ELENA / McLean, Mark (CERN) ; Cenede, Jean (CERN) ; Hori, Masaki (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.) ; Tranquille, Gerard (CERN)
ELENA is a compact ring for cooling and further deceleration of 5.3 MeV antiprotons delivered by the CERN Antiproton Decelerator. It decelerates antiprotons to a minimum energy of 100 keV, creating special challenges for the beam instrumentation. [...]

High-resolution laser resonances of antiprotonic helium in superfluid $^{4}$He / Sótér, Anna (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt. ; Zurich, ETH) ; Aghai-Khozani, Hossein (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.) ; Barna, Dániel (CERN ; Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Dax, Andreas (CERN ; PSI, Villigen) ; Venturelli, Luca (U. Brescia ; INFN, Pavia) ; Hori, Masaki (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt. ; Munich U.)
When atoms are placed into liquids, their optical spectral lines corresponding to the electronic transitions are greatly broadened compared to those of single, isolated atoms. This linewidth increase can often reach a factor of more than a million, obscuring spectroscopic structures and preventing high-resolution spectroscopy, even when superfluid helium, which is the most transparent, cold and chemically inert liquid, is used as the host material. Recent results of laser spectroscopy experiments of pionic helium atoms at PSI / HORI, Masaki (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.) ; Aghai-Khozani, H (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.) ; Sótér, Anna (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.) ; Dax, Andreas (PSI, Villigen) ; Barna, Daniel (CERN)
A review of a recent experiment carried out at PSI involving laser spectroscopy of metastable pionic helium $(\pi^4\textrm{He}^+ \equiv \pi^- + ^4\textrm{He}^{2+}+e^-)$ atoms is presented. An infrared transition $(n, \ell ) = (17,16) \to (17, 15)$ at a resonance frequency of $\nu \approx 183760$ GHz was detected..

Long-lived pionic helium atoms (composed of a helium-4 nucleus, an electron and a negatively charged pion) are synthesized in a superfluid-helium target, as confirmed by laser spectroscopy involving the pion-occupied orbitals..

Single-photon laser spectroscopy of cold antiprotonic helium / Hori, Masaki (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.)
Some laser spectroscopy experiments carried out by the Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons (ASACUSA) collaboration to measure the single-photon transition frequencies of antiprotonic helium ( $\overline {p}\text {He}^{+}\equiv \overline {p}+\text {He}^{2+}+e^{-}$ ) atoms are reviewed. The $\overline {p}\text {He}^{+}$ were cooled to temperature T = 1.5–1.7 K by buffer-gas cooling in a cryogenic gas target, thus reducing the thermal Doppler width in the single-photon resonance lines. Precision laser spectroscopy experiments on antiprotonic helium / Hori, Masaki (Munich, Max Planck Inst. Quantenopt.)
At CERN‘s Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility, the Atomic Spectroscopyand Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons (ASACUSA) collaboration is carrying out precise laser spectroscopy experiments on antiprotonic helium ($\bar{p}He^+\equiv \bar{p} + He^{2+}+e^-$) atoms. By employing buffer-gas cooling techniquesin a cryogenic gas target, samples of atoms were cooled to temperatureT = 1.5–1.7 K, thereby reducing the Doppler width in the single-photon resonance lines.
