M-theory on Calabi-Yau Five-Folds / Haupt, Alexander S (Imperial Coll., London ; Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.) ; Lukas, Andre (Oxford U., Theor. Phys.) ; Stelle, K S (Imperial Coll., London ; Potsdam, Max Planck Inst. ; CERN)
We study the compactification of M-theory on Calabi-Yau five-folds and the resulting N=2 super-mechanics theories. By explicit reduction from 11 dimensions, including both bosonic and fermionic terms, we calculate the one-dimensional effective action and show that it can be derived from an N=2 super-space action. Gravitational multi-NUT solitons, Komar masses and charges / Bossard, Guillaume (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.) ; Nicolai, Hermann (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst.) ; Stelle, K.S. (Potsdam, Max Planck Inst. ; Imperial Coll., London ; CERN)
Generalising expressions given by Komar, we give precise definitions of gravitational mass and solitonic NUT charge and we apply these to the description of a class of Minkowski-signature multi-Taub-NUT solutions without rod singularities. A Wick rotation then yields the corresponding class of Euclidean-signature gravitational multi-instantons..

M-theory/heterotic Duality : a Kaluza-Klein Perspective / Lü, H ; Pope, C N ; Stelle, Kellogg S
We study the duality relationship between M-theory and heterotic string theory at the classical level, emphasising the transformations between the Kaluza-Klein reductions of these two theories on the K3 and T^3 manifolds. Particular attention is devoted to the corresponding structures of sigma-model cosets and the correspondence between the p-brane charge lattices [...]

The recent proposal by Hawking and Turok for obtaining an open inflationary universe from singular instantons makes use of low-energy effective Lagrangians describing gravity coupled to scalars and non-propagating antisymmetric tensors. In this paper we derive some exact results for Lagrangians of this type, obtained from spherical compactifications of M-theory and string theory. [...]

Heterotic M-theory in Five Dimensions / Lukas, Andre (Pennsylvania U.) ; Ovrut, Burt A. (Pennsylvania U.) ; Stelle, K.S. (Imperial Coll., London ; CERN) ; Waldram, Daniel (Princeton U.)
We derive the five-dimensional effective action of strongly coupled heterotic string theory for the complete (1,1) sector of the theory by performing a reduction, on a Calabi-Yau three-fold, of M-theory on S^1/Z_2. A crucial ingredient for a consistent truncation is a non-zero mode of the antisymmetric tensor field strength which arises due to magnetic sources on the orbifold planes. [...]

Euclidean-signature Supergravities, Dualities and Instantons / Cremmer, E. (Ecole Normale Superieure) ; Lavrinenko, I.V. (Texas A-M) ; Lu, Hong (Ecole Normale Superieure) ; Pope, C.N. (Texas A-M) ; Stelle, K.S. (Imperial Coll., London) ; Tran, Tuan A. (Texas A-M)
We study the Euclidean-signature supergravities that arise by compactifying D=11 supergravity or type IIB supergravity on a torus that includes the time direction. We show that the usual T-duality relation between type IIA and type IIB supergravities compactified on a spatial circle no longer holds if the reduction is performed on the time direction. [...]

The Universe as a Domain Wall / Lukas, Andre (Pennsylvania U.) ; Ovrut, Burt A. (Pennsylvania U.) ; Stelle, K.S. (Imperial Coll., London ; CERN) ; Waldram, Daniel (Princeton U.)
It is shown that the effective five-dimensional theory of the strongly coupled heterotic string is a gauged version of N=1 five-dimensional supergravity with four-dimensional boundaries. For the universal supermultiplets, this theory is explicitly constructed by a generalized dimensional reduction procedure on a Calabi-Yau manifold. [...]
