Laser spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium and stringent constraint on the antiproton charge and mass / PS205 Collaboration
The antiprotonic helium atom-molecule (atomcule in short), pe/sup -/ He/sup 2+/=pHe/sup +/, first discovered at KEK and studied in detail at LEAR, is a unique metastable existence interfacing between matter and antimatter. Our recent high-resolution laser spectroscopy of pHe /sup +/ has reached a precision of 0.5 ppm, and the agreement between our experimental values of transition energies and the calculations has become better than 2 ppm. Laser resonance transitions between normally metastable states of antiprotonic helium atoms were observed making use of state dependent quenching effects caused by small admixtures of \htwo\ molecules. By selectively shortening the lifetimes of states with higher principal quantum number $n$ as compared to those of lower $n$, this method for the first time provides access to all initially populated metastable states of \pbar\hep\ atoms. Very weak laser resonances of unfavoured transitions $(n,l) \rightarrow (n+1,l-1)$ have been observed in metastable \={p}$^4$He$^+$ atoms by using a pulsed antiproton beam. The observed wavelengths (713.578 $\pm$ 0.006 nm for $l$ = 34 and 726.095 $\pm$ 0.004 nm for $l$ = 35), as well as those of the known favoured transitions, are to a few ppm accounted for by a recent variational calculation of Korobov, which includes the relativistic correction..
