Performance and long-term aging studies on Eco-Friendly Resistive Plate Chamber detectors / RPC EcoGas@GIF++ Collaboration
In High Energy Physics Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors are typically operated in avalanche mode, making use of a high-performance gas mixture whose main component, Tetrafluoroethane (C2H2F4), is classified as a fluorinated high Global Warming Potential greenhouse gas. The RPC EcoGas@GIF++ Collaboration is pursuing an intensive R&D; on new gas mixtures for RPC detectors to explore environmentally friendly alternatives complying with recent European regulations. Characterization of glass multigap RPC detector with alternative gas to SF6 / Verzeroli, Mattia (IP2I, Lyon) ; Guida, Roberto (CERN) ; Laktineh, Imad (IP2I, Lyon) ; Mandelli, Beatrice (CERN) ; Rigoletti, Gianluca (CERN)
Glass Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber detectors are primarily valued for their exceptional time resolution and are widely used in fields such as high-energy physics and tomography applications. Traditionally, these detectors are operated using Freon-based gas mixtures, primarily composed of C2H2F4 (R134a) and SF6, both classified as greenhouse gases. [...]

Evaluating the performance and long-term stability with LHC-like background irradiation of RPC detectors with CO2-based gas mixtures / Juks, Stefania A (U. Paris-Saclay) ; Guida, Roberto (CERN) ; Mandelli, Beatrice (CERN) ; Rigoletti, Gianluca (CERN) ; Verzeroli, Mattia (Lyon U.)
Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors at CERN’s LHC experiments traditionally use a Freon-based gas mixture containing C2H2F4 (R-134a) and SF6, both of which are high global warming potential (GWP) gases. To reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, operational costs, and optimise RPC performance, one possible mid-term solution is the gas mixture with a substitution of 30% of R-134a with CO2 in the standard RPC gas mixture. Long-term stability of SWPCs in monitoring CF4-based gas mixture in CMS CSC detectors / Verzeroli, Mattia (IP2I, Lyon) ; Arena, Maria Cristina (Pavia U.) ; Guida, Roberto (CERN) ; Mandelli, Beatrice (CERN) ; Rigoletti, Gianluca (CERN)
At the CERN CMS experiment, CSC detectors are employed and operated with a gas mixture based on CF$_4$. In 2015, two Single Wire Proportional Chambers (SWPCs) were installed along the gas line to monitor the quality of the gas. [...]

The ALICE Muon Identifier (MID) system consists of 72 single-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors, operated with a gas mixture of C2H2F4, iC4H10, and SF6 at a ratio of 89.7%/10%/0.3%, along with 37% of relative humidity. The combined effects of background irradiation and the electric field within the detector’s gas gap, together with the high concentration of fluorinated gases used, result in the production of F− ions and F-based impurities. Eco-friendly resistive plate chamber detectors for HEP applications / Pastore, A (INFN, Bari) ; Congedo, L (INFN, Bari) ; Abbrescia, M (INFN, Bari) ; Aly, R (INFN, Bari) ; Serio, M De (INFN, Bari) ; Galati, G (INFN, Bari) ; Pugliese, G (INFN, Bari) ; Ramos, D (INFN, Bari) ; Simone, S (INFN, Bari) ; Boscherini, D (INFN, Bologna) et al.
Resistive Plate Chamber detectors are largely employed in current High Energy Physics experiments, thanks to their relatively low cost and good spatial/time resolution. They are typically operated in avalanche mode with large fractions of Tetrafluoroethane (C2H2F4), a gas recently banned by the European Union due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP). [...]

Resistive Plate Chamber detectors at the CERN LHC experiments use a Freon-based gas mixture containing R-134a and SF6, high global warming potential greenhouse gases. To minimize greenhouse gas emissions and expenses and optimize RPC performance, it is crucial to research new environmentally friendly gas mixtures. [...]

Signal shape studies and rate dependence of HFO-based gas mixtures in RPC detectors / RPC ECOGas@GIF++ Collaboration
The RPCs employed at the LHC experiments are currently operated in avalanche mode, with a mixture containing a large fraction of C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ ($\approx$90% or more) with the addition of i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$ and SF$_{6}$ in different concentrations. However, C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ and SF$_{6}$ are fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) with Global Warming Potential (GWP) of $\approx$1400 and $\approx$22800, respectively. [...]
