Padua (main)) ; Avati, Valentina (CERN ; AGH-UST, Cracow) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Deile, Mario (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Dziedzic, Bartosz (Cracow, INP) ; Garcia Morales, Hector (CERN ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Gavrikov, Yury (St. Petersburg, INP ; CERN) ; Hiller, Karlheinz (DESY, Zeuthen) et al.
Bent crystals can deflect charged particles by trapping them within the potential well generated by neighboring crystalline planes and forcing them to follow the curvature of the crystal itself. This property has been extensively studied over the past decade at the CERN accelerator complex, as well as in other laboratories, for a variety of applications, ranging from beam collimation to beam extraction and in-beam fixed target experiments. The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project will upgrade the LHC machine to allow operation with increased luminosity for the experiments. In order to achieve this goal, different operational parameters of the machine need to be pushed beyond the present design values, including the stored beam energy. [...]

Crystal Collimation of 20 MJ Heavy-Ion Beams at the HL-LHC
/ D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Galluccio, Francesca (INFN, Naples) ; Lamas Garcia, Inigo (CERN) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Nevay, Laurence (Royal Holloway, U. of London ; CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Rossi, Roberto (CERN) et al.
The concept of crystal collimation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) relies on the use of bent crystals that can deflect halo particles by a much larger angle than the standard multi-stage collimation system. Following an extensive campaign of studies and performance validations, a number of crystal collimation tests with Pb ion beams were performed in 2018 at energies up to 6.37 Z TeV. [...]
