Gantry design using achromatic scaling fixed-field magnets / Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (Brussels U.) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Vanwelde, Marion (Brussels U.) ; Pauly, Nicolas (Brussels U.)
Proton therapy provides significant advantages over classic radiotherapy for specific cancerous diseases, notably by limiting the delivered dose to organs at risk (OARs). Novel treatment modalities such as flash and arc therapy require changing the energy delivered at the isocenter while providing a high dose rate. [...]

Conceptual lattice design for vertical fixed field medical accelerators / Vanwelde, Marion (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (Brussels U.) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Pauly, Nicolas (Brussels U.) ; Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.)
Hadron therapy is established as a method of choice for a number of cancerous diseases, and its advantages are well-established for specific malignancies. Modern medical particle accelerators still struggle to fulfil critical features required by advanced treatment modalities, such as variable energy beams, high repetition rate, and pulse-by-pulse intensity modulation. Increased dose rate for a proton therapy eye treatment nozzle on a medical gantry system using a diamond degrader / Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Pauly, Nicolas (Brussels U.) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (Brussels U.) ; Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.) ; Vanwelde, Marion (Brussels U.)
The IBA ProteusOne (P1) system is suitable to treat ocular tumors and achieves efficient dose conformality using state-of-the-art pencil beam scanning. Nevertheless, with the limited cyclotron current of the P1 system, clinically relevant (> 15 Gy/min) dose rates can barely be achieved in eye tumors treatment cases with the baseline configuration of the system due to the significantly high energy degradation required (from 230 to 70 MeV). [...]

Study of the Performance of the CERN Proton Synchrotron Internal Dump / Pugnat, Thomas (CERN) ; Domange, Delphine (Brussels U.) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (Brussels U.) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Huschauer, Alexander (CERN) ; Niang, Samuel (CERN) ; Tesse, Robin (Brussels U.)
In the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade project, a new internal dump for the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) has been designed, installed, and successfully commissioned. This device is meant to move rapidly into the beam and stop charged particles over several turns to provide protection to the PS hardware against beam-induced damage. [...]

Georges: A modular Python library for seamless beam dynamics simulations and optimization / Tesse, Robin (U. Brussels (main)) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN ; U. Brussels (main)) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (U. Brussels (main)) ; Pauly, Nicolas (U. Brussels (main)) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (U. Brussels (main)) ; Vanwelde, Marion (U. Brussels (main))
Particle tracking codes such as MAD-X or TRANSPORT commonly use a matrix formalism to propagate beams through magnetic elements as it simplifies the analysis of particle behavior, facilitates beam optimization and component design, and enables accurate particle accelerator simulations. However, these codes are inefficient when tracking many particles or accounting for energy degradation along the beamline. [...]

Ambient dose simulation of the ProtherWal proton therapy centre radioactive shielding decay using BDSIM and FISPACT-II / Ramoisiaux, Eliott (U. Brussels (main)) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN) ; Tesse, Robin (U. Brussels (main)) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (U. Brussels (main)) ; Pauly, Nicolas (U. Brussels (main)) ; Stichelbaut, Frédéric (IBA, Louvain-la-Neuve)
Next-generation proton therapy centres couple treatment and research programs, leading to higher beam currents and longer irradiation times than in clinical conditions. Large fluxes of energetic secondary particles are produced and long- and short-term radioactive nuclides are generated in the concrete shielding of the cyclotron vault. [...]

Realistic CAD-Based Geometries for Arbitrary Magnets with Beam Delivery Simulation (BDSIM) / Ramoisiaux, Eliott (U. Monte Carlo simulations are required to evaluate beam losses and secondary radiation accurately in particle accelerators and beamlines. Detailed CAD geometries are critical to account for a realistic distribution of material masses but increase the model complexity and often lead to code duplication. [...]

Activation of the IBA Proteus One Proton Therapy Beamline Using BDSIM and FISPACT-II / Ramoisiaux, Eliott (U. Brussels (main)) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (U. Brussels (main)) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (U. Brussels (main) ; CERN) ; Pauly, Nicolas (U. Brussels (main)) ; Tesse, Robin (U. Brussels (main)) ; Vanwelde, Marion (U. Brussels (main))
Cyclotron-based proton therapy systems generate large fluxes of secondary particles due to the beam interactions with the beamline elements, with the energy degrader being the dominant source. Compact systems exacerbate these challenges for concrete shielding and beamline element activation. [...]

The Zgoubidoo Python Framework for Ray-Tracing Simulations with Zgoubi: Applications to Fixed-Field Accelerators / Vanwelde, Marion (U. Brussels (main)) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (U. Brussels (main)) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (U. Brussels (main) ; CERN) ; Pauly, Nicolas (U. Brussels (main)) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (U. Brussels (main)) ; Tesse, Robin (U. Brussels (main))
The study of beam dynamics in accelerators featuring main magnets with complex geometries such as Fixed Field Accelerators (FFAs) requires simulation codes allowing step-by-step particle tracking in complex magnetic fields, such as the Zgoubi ray-tracing code. To facilitate the use of Zgoubi and to allow readily processing the resulting tracking data, we developed a modern Python 3 interface, Zgoubidoo, using Zgoubi in the backend. [...]

Achromatic Gantry Design Using Fixed-Field Spiral Combined-Function Magnets / Tesse, Robin (U. Brussels (main)) ; Gnacadja, Eustache (U. Brussels (main)) ; Hernalsteens, Cédric (CERN ; U. Brussels (main)) ; Pauly, Nicolas (U. Brussels (main)) ; Ramoisiaux, Eliott (U. Brussels (main)) ; Vanwelde, Marion (U. Brussels (main))
Arc-therapy and flash therapy are promising proton therapy treatment modalities as they enable further sparing of the healthy tissues surrounding the tumor site. They impose strong constraints on the beam delivery system and rotating gantry structure, in particular in providing high dose rate and fast energy scanning. [...]
