In the context of high-energy physics, the use of Nb3Sn superconducting magnets as a cost-effective and reliable technology depends on improvements in the following areas: long development and manufacturing cycles, conductor degradation after thermal cycling, long training, as well as a demonstration in accelerator magnets with a beam aperture of the full potential of modern Nb3Sn conductors. In short, performance, robustness, and cost are the three issues to be addressed. [...]

In the context of the High-Field Magnet (HFM) Programme, hosted at CERN, and the Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology (CHART) Initiative, hosted at PSI, the Magnet Development (MagDev) project aims to contribute to the Future Circular Collider (FCC) studies through, among others: (i) research on enabling technologies and (ii) high-field Low Temperature superconducting (LTS) and High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets. After a first experience with the CD1 magnet, a Canted-Cosine-Theta (CCT) Nb3Sn demonstrator, a roadmap has been established with milestones ranging from enabling technologies tested in powered samples and coils, to ultimate-field and hybrid LTS/HTS short magnets. In this article, we attempt to summarize the 5-year long involvement of PSI through the CHART MagDev program with R&D; on the Canted Cosine Theta (CCT) technology as a candidate for an FCC-hh main dipole magnet. We present the test results of the Canted Dipole 1 (CD1) 1-m-long 10-T Nb$_{3}$Sn demonstrator magnet, as well as a subjective list of ‘pros and cons' of CCT for the FCC-hh that we compiled along the way. Mechanical analysis of the collaring process of the 11 T dipole magnet / Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Devred, Arnaud (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ferradas Troitino, Jose (CERN) ; Ferradas Troitino, Salvador (CERN) ; Grosclaude, Philippe (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) et al.
As part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator upgrades foreseen by the high luminosity-LHC project, the CERN 11 T program is aimed at replacing standard LHC Nb-Ti main dipole magnets, operating with a bore field of 8.3 T, with pairs of shorter Nb$_3$Sn dipole magnets with a bore field of 11 T and the same total integrated field, thus providing space for additional collimators in the dispersion suppressor region. At the time of the submission of this paper, six single-aperture and two double-aperture short models have been fabricated and tested. [...]

Influence of transverse stress exerted at room temperature on the superconducting properties of Nb$_3$Sn wires / Ebermann, P (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Baumgartner, T (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.)
Results on the irreversible degradation of Rutherford cables caused by transverse stress applied at room temperature have been recently published in the frame of the Future Circular Collider study for the 16 T dipole development programme. In order to investigate the degradation process of Nb3Sn composite superconductors, experiments based on wires of the same type as used in the cable have been launched. [...]

Finite Element Analysis of the Mechanical Conditions of the Nb$_3$Sn Cable of the 11 T Dipole Magnet During Operation / Löffler, Christian (CERN) ; Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Nilsson, Emelie (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN)
The development of the 11 T Dipole for the Dispersion Suppressor Collimators (DS11T) for the HiLumi LHC Project at CERN is nearly completed for the RRP conductor route. Multiscale approach to the mechanical behavior of epoxy impregnated Nb$_{3}$Sn coils for the 11 T dipole / Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Loffler, Christian H (CERN) ; Smekens, David (CERN) ; Fontenla, A T (CERN) ; Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN)
The superconducting 11 T dipole magnets developed at CERN for the HL-LHC project are equipped with coils manufactured from Nb$_{3}$Sn Rutherford cables and following the wind and react fabrication technique. The brittleness of the multifilamentary structure of the Nb$_{3}$Sn within the cable strands exposes the coils to permanent performance degradation when subjected to excessive strain during assembly and operation. Characterisation of the Mechanical Behaviour of Superconducting Cables Used in High Field Magnets From Room Temperature Down to 77K / Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Daly, Michael (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (CERN) ; Fichera, Claudio (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Mikkola, Tommi (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN) ; Vallone, Giorgio (CERN)
A comprehensive knowledge of the mechanical properties of the superconducting cable used in high-field magnets is of paramount importance to study and model the behaviour of the magnet coil from assembly to the operational conditions at cryogenic temperature. The mechanical characterisation of such kind of materials presents practical challenges associated with the heterogeneity of the materials, the geometry, size and quality of the samples that can be produced out of actual cables.
