Analysis of inhomogeneities in Nb$_{3}$Sn wires by combined SEM and SHPM and their impact on J $_{c}$ and T $_{c}$ / Pfeiffer, S (Vienna, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Baumgartner, T (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Löffler, S (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Stöger-Pollach, M (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Hopkins, S C (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Eisterer, M (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Bernardi, J (Vienna, Tech. U.)
Abstract We demonstrate the combined use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning Hall probe microscopy (SHPM) to analyse inhomogeneities in Nb3Sn wires. Inhomogeneities of the A15 phase in Nb3Sn sub-elements of a Ti-alloyed Restacked Rod Process wire and a Ta-alloyed Powder-In-Tube wire are investigated. [...]

A procedural solution for determining the temperature dependence of transport critical current in Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting wires using magnetization measurements / Pong, Ian (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Ekin, Jack (NIST, Boulder) ; Baumgartner, Thomas (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Cheggour, Najib (Florida State U.)
Using magnetization techniques to determine the temperature dependence of critical current in Nb$_{3}$Sn wires is attractive because of the relative ease compared with using variable-temperature transport measurements. However, there is a known mismatch in the temperature scaling characterizations when using magnetization data compared to transport data. [...]

Influence of transverse stress exerted at room temperature on the superconducting properties of Nb$_3$Sn wires / Ebermann, P (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Baumgartner, T (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Behnsen, J (U. Manchester (main)) ; Daly, M (CERN) ; Terricabras, A Gallifa (CERN) ; Koettig, T (CERN) ; Lackner, F (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Eisterer, M (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.)
Results on the irreversible degradation of Rutherford cables caused by transverse stress applied at room temperature have been recently published in the frame of the Future Circular Collider study for the 16 T dipole development programme. In order to investigate the degradation process of Nb3Sn composite superconductors, experiments based on wires of the same type as used in the cable have been launched. [...]

The CERN FCC Conductor Development Program: A Worldwide Effort for the Future Generation of High Field Magnets / Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Hopkins, Simon (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Richter, David (CERN) ; Tommasini, Davide (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Sugano, Michinaka ; Ogitsu, Toru ; Kawashima, Shinya (Kobe Steel) et al.
The study of next-generation high-energy accelerators based on 16 T dipoles has emphasized the need for higher performance, cost-effective Nb$_3$Sn superconducting wires. A Conductor Development Program aiming to reach a non-copper critical current density ($J_c$) of 1500 A/mm2 at 16 T and 4.2 K has been launched by CERN, with the involvement of industry and laboratories worldwide. Effects of inhomogeneities on pinning force scaling in Nb$_3$Sn wires / Baumgartner, Thomas (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Pfeiffer, S (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Bernardi, Johannes (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Eisterer, Michael (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.)
We analyzed the effects of A-15 phase inhomogeneities, in particular Sn concentration gradients, on the pinning force scaling behavior of Nb3Sn wires. This was accomplished using a software code capable of simulating both magnetization and transport measurements on wires containing sub-elements with an arbitrary (e.g. [...]

Thallium-based high-temperature superconductors for beam impedance mitigation in the Future Circular Collider / Calatroni, S (CERN) ; Bellingeri, E (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Ferdeghini, C (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Putti, M (CNR-SPIN, Naples ; Genoa U.) ; Vaglio, R (CNR-SPIN, Naples ; INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Baumgartner, T (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Eisterer, M (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.)
CERN has recently started a design study for a possible next-generation high-energy hadron–hadron collider (Future Circular Collider—FCC-hh). The FCC-hh study calls for an unprecedented center-of-mass collision energy of 100 TeV, achievable by colliding counter-rotating proton beams with an energy of 50 TeV steered in a 100 km circumference tunnel by superconducting magnets which produce a dipole field of 16 T. Effects of neutron irradiation on pinning force scaling in state-of-the-art Nb$_{3}$Sn wires / Baumgartner, T (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Eisterer, M (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Weber, H W (Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Flükiger, R (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN)
We present an extensive irradiation study involving five state-of-the-art Nb$_{3}$Sn wires which were subjected to sequential neutron irradiation up to a fast neutron fluence of 1.6 x 10(22) m(-2) (E > 0.1 MeV). The volume pinning force of short wire samples was assessed in the temperature range from 4.2 to 15 K in applied fields of up to 7 T by means of SQUID magnetometry in the unirradiated state and after each irradiation step.
