The Penetrating particle ANalyzer (PAN) instrument for measurements of low energy cosmic rays / Ambrosi, Giovanni (INFN, Perugia) ; Azzarello, Philipp (Geneva U.) ; Bergmann, Benedikt (CTU, Prague) ; Bertucci, Bruna (INFN, Perugia) ; Cadoux, Franck (Geneva U.) ; Duranti, Matteo (INFN, Perugia) ; Ionica, Maria (INFN, Perugia) ; Kole, Merlin (Geneva U.) ; Paniccia, Mercedes (Geneva U.) ; Plainaki, Christina (CERN) et al.
PAN is an instrument designed to precisely measure and monitor the flux, composition, and direction of highly penetrating particles (>100MeV/nucleon) in deep space and interplanetary missions with an energy resolution better than 10% for nuclei from H to Fe at 1GeV/n. The detector, limited to about 20kg in mass and 20W in power consumption, is based on the well-known magnetic spectrometer detection principle, and exploits the advantages provided by the integration of ultra-thin microstrip silicon detectors, hybrid silicon pixel detectors and silicon photomultipliers. In proton-therapy clinical practice a constant RBE equal to 1.1 is adopted, regardless of the demonstrated RBE variations, which depends on physical and biological parameters. Among other mechanisms, nuclear interactions might influence the proton-RBE due to secondary heavier particles produced by target fragmentation that can significantly contribute to the total dose: an un-wanted and undetermined increase of normal tissues complications probability may occur. The High Energy cosmic-Radiation Detection (HERD) facility is one of several space astronomy payloads of the cosmic light house program onboard China's Space Station, which is planned for operation starting around 2020 for about 10 years. Beam test with a HERD prototype, to verify the HERD specifications and the reading out method of wavelength shifting fiber and image intensified CCD, was taken at CERN SPS in November, 2015. [...]

High-Efficiency Deflection of High-Energy Protons through Axial Channeling in a Bent Crystal / Scandale, Walter (CERN) ; Vomiero, Alberto (INFM, Brescia) ; Baricordi, Stefano (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Dalpiaz, Pietro (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Fiorini, Massimiliano (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Guidi, Vincenzo (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Mazzolari, Andrea (INFN, Ferrara ; Ferrara U.) ; Della Mea, Gianantonio (INFN, Legnaro) ; Milan, Riccardo (INFN, Legnaro) ; Ambrosi, Giovanni (INFN, Perugia ; Perugia U.) et al.
Beam deflection due to axial channeling in a silicon crystal bent along the [111] axis was observed with 400  GeV/c protons at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The condition for doughnut scattering of protons by the atomic strings of the crystal was attained. [...]

Deflection of 400  GeV/c proton beam with bent silicon crystals at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Scandale, Walter (CERN) ; Carnera, Alberto ; Della Mea, Gianantonio ; De Salvador, Davide ; Milan, Riccardo ; Vomiero, Alberto ; Baricordi, Stefano ; Dalpiaz, Pietro ; Fiorini, Massimiliano ; Guidi, Vincenzo et al.
This paper presents a detailed study of the deflection phenomena of a 400  GeV/c proton beam impinging on a new generation of bent silicon crystals; the tests have been performed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron H8 beam line. Channeling and volume reflection angles are measured with an extremely precise goniometer and with high resolution silicon microstrip detectors. [...]

Double volume reflection of a proton beam by a sequence of two bent crystals / Scandale, Walter (CERN) ; Carnera, Alberto (INFN, Legnaro ; Padua U.) ; Della Mea, Gianantonio (INFN, Legnaro ; Trento U.) ; De Salvador, Davide (INFN, Legnaro ; Padua U.) ; Milan, Riccardo (INFN, Legnaro) ; Vomiero, Alberto (INFN, Legnaro ; INFM, Brescia) ; Baricordi, Stefano (INFN, Ferrara) ; Dalpiaz, Pietro (INFN, Ferrara) ; Fiorini, Massimiliano (INFN, Ferrara) ; Guidi, Vincenzo (INFN, Ferrara) et al.
The doubling of the angle of beam deflection due to volume reflection of protons by a sequence of two bent silicon crystals was experimentally observed at the 400 GeV proton beam of the CERN SPS. A similar sequence of short bent crystals can be used as an efficient primary collimator for the Large Hadron Collider..

High-Efficiency Volume Reflection of an Ultrarelativistic Proton Beam with a Bent Silicon Crystal / Scandale, Walter (CERN) ; Still, Dean A ; Carnera, Alberto ; Della Mea, Gianantonio ; De Salvador, Davide ; Milan, Riccardo ; Vomiero, Alberto ; Baricordi, Stefano ; Dalpiaz, Pietro ; Fiorini, Massimiliano et al.
The volume reflection phenomenon was detected while investigating 400 GeV proton interactions with bent silicon crystals in the external beam H8 of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Such a process was observed for a wide interval of crystal orientations relative to the beam axis, and its efficiency exceeds 95%, thereby surpassing any previously observed value. [...]

Experimental Study of Crystal Channelling at CERN-SPS for Beam-Halo Cleaning / FP6 Collaboration
An efficient and robust collimation system is mandatory for any superconducting hadron collider, in particular for the LHC, which will store a beam of unprecedented high intensity and energy. The usage of highly efficient and short primary bent-crystal collimators might be a possibility for reaching nominal and ultimate LHC intensity. [...]
