Progress in Diamond Detectors / RD42 Collaboration
Detectors based on Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond have been used successfully in Luminosity and Beam Condition Monitors (BCM) in the highest radiation areas of the LHC. Future experiments at CERN will accumulate an order of magnitude larger fluence. [...]

The paradox of characteristics of silicon detectors operated at temperature close to liquid helium / Eremin, V (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Shepelev, A (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst. ; St. Petersburg Acad. U.) ; Verbitskaya, E (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Zamantzas, C (CERN) ; Galkin, A (Nauka, Moscow)
The aim of this study is to give characterization of silicon p$^+$/n/n$^+$ detectors for the monitoring systems of the Large Hadron Collider machine at CERN with the focus on justifying the choice of silicon resistivity for the detector operation at the temperature of 1.9–10 K. The detectors from n-type silicon with the resistivity of 10, 4.5, and 0.5 k$\Omega$ cm were investigated at the temperature from 293 up to 7 K by the Transient Current Technique with a 660 nm pulse laser and alpha-particles. Operational voltage of silicon heavily irradiated strip detectors utilizing avalanche multiplication effect / Verbitskaya, E (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Eremin, V (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Zabrodskii, A (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.)
Recent results on the collected charge $Q_c$ in heavily irradiated Si strip detectors developed by RD50 collaboration for the high luminosity operation of the LHC (sLHC) showed a significant $Q_c$ enhancement if the detectors were operated at a bias voltage beyond 1000 V. To explain these results, a physical model based on carrier avalanche multiplication in high electric fields near a n$^+$-p junction was developed at the Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute. [...]

Restriction on the gain in collected charge due to carrier avalanche multiplication in heavily irradiated Si strip detectors / Verbitskaya, E (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Eremin, V (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Zabrodskii, A (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Li, Z (Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Luukka, P (Helsinki Inst. of Phys.)
Recent experiments on silicon detectors developed by the CERN-RD50 collaboration for very high luminosity colliders showed a significant enhancement of the collected charge $Q_c$ in Si detectors irradiated to the fluence of $10^{15} – 10^{16} \ \rm{n}_{eq}/cm^2$ if the devices were operated at high bias voltage. The enhancement arises from carrier avalanche multiplication in high electric field of the junction. [...]

Simulation study of signal formation in position sensitive planar p-on-n silicon detectors after short range charge injection / Peltola, Timo (Texas Tech. ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Eremin, Vladimir (Boskovic Inst., Zagreb) ; Verbitskaya, Elena (Boskovic Inst., Zagreb) ; Härkönen, Jaakko (Helsinki Inst. of Phys. ; Helsinki U.)
Segmented silicon detectors (micropixel and microstrip) are the main type of detectors used in the inner trackers of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments at CERN. Due to the high luminosity and eventual high fluence, detectors with fast response to fit the short shaping time of 20 ns and sufficient radiation hardness are required. [...]

Silicon detectors were proposed as novel Beam Loss Monitors (BLM) for the control of the radiation environment in the vicinity of the superconductive magnets of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. The present work is aimed at enhancing the BLM sensitivity and therefore the capability of triggering the beam abort system before a critical radiation load hits the superconductive coils. [...]

Beam Loss Monitors for the Cryogenic LHC Magnets / Bartosik, Marcin R (CERN) ; Alexopoulos, Andreas (CERN) ; Dehning, Bernd (CERN) ; Eremin, Vladimir (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.) ; Griesmayer, Erich (IAEA, Vienna) ; Sapinski, Mariusz (CERN) ; Verbitskaya, Elena (Ioffe Phys. Tech. Inst.)
The Beam Loss Monitoring system of the Large Hadron Collider close to the interaction points contains mostly gas ionization chambers working at room temperature, located far from the superconducting coils of the magnets. The system records particles lost from circulating proton beams, but is also sensitive to particles coming from the experimental collisions, which do not contribute significantly to the heat deposition in the superconducting coils. Beam Loss Monitors (BLM) made of silicon are new devices for monitoring of radiation environment in the vicinity of superconductive magnets of the Large Hadron Collider. The challenge of BLMs is extreme radiation hardness, up to 10 16 protons/cm 2 while placed in superfluid helium (temperature of 1.9 K). [...]
