Electron Beam Characterization of REBCO-Coated Conductors at Cryogenic Conditions / Haubner, Michal (CERN ; Prague, Tech. U.) ; Krkotic, Patrick (CERN) ; Serafim, Catarina (CERN ; Helsinki U.) ; Petit, Valentine (CERN) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN) ; Romanov, Artur (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Puig, Teresa (Barcelona, Autonoma U.) ; Gutierrez, Joffre (Barcelona, Autonoma U.)
Particle accelerators with superconducting magnets operating at cryogenic temperatures use a beam screen (BS) liner that extracts heat generated by the circulating bunched charge particle beam before it can reach the magnets. The BS surface, commonly made of high-conductivity copper, provides a low impedance for beam stability reasons, low secondary electron yield (SEY)to mitigate the electron-cloud (EC) effect, and low electron-stimulated desorption yield (ESD) to limit the dynamic pressure rise due to EC. [...]

Electron conditioning of technical surfaces at cryogenic and room temperature in the 0–1 keV energy range / Haubner, Michal (Prague, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN)
In the superconducting magnets of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, most of the beam-induced heat load is intercepted by a beam-screen (BS) cryogenically cooled to 5–20 K. When circulating the bunched proton beam, an electron cloud (EC) can form and bombard the BS copper surface with high doses of predominantly low-energy electrons, which desorb gas and consequently increase the pressure. Collector-based measurement of gas desorption and secondary electron emission induced by 0–1.4 keV electrons from LHC-grade copper at 15 K / Haubner, Michal (Prague, Tech. U. ; CERN) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN)
CERN’s Large Hadron Collider cryomagnets embed a 1.9 K UHV chamber lined with a 5–20 K beam-screen (BS) that intercepts the synchrotron radiation and electron cloud (EC). The low–energy EC irradiates the BS and desorbs gas, creating a dynamic vacuum effect. [...]

Electron flux and pressure dynamic in the LHC vacuum pilot sector as a function of beam parameters and beam pipe properties / Buratin, Elena (CERN ; EPFL, Lausanne, FSL) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN) ; Chiggiato, Paolo (CERN) ; Fasoli, Ambrogio (EPFL, Lausanne, FSL)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is affected by the electron cloud (EC) phenomenon that can provoke beam instabilities, detrimental heat loads and pressure increases in the vacuum system. An innovative dedicated system called vacuum pilot sector (VPS) provides a continuous monitoring of the electron flux and of the pressure signals thanks to electron pickup and vacuum gauges. [...]

Recovering about 5 km of LHC Beam Vacuum System after Sector 3-4 Incident / Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN) ; Jenninger, Berthold (CERN) ; Jimenez, Jose (CERN) ; Mahner, Edgar (CERN) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Sinturel, Alexandre (CERN) ; Vidal, Alexis (CERN)
During the sector 3-4 incident, the two apertures of the 3 km long cryogenic vacuum sectors of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) were brutally vented to helium. A systematic visual inspection of the beam pipe revealed the presence of soot, metallic debris and super insulation debris [...]

Ultrathin Polyimide-Stainless Steel Heater for Vacuum System Bake-out / Rathjen, Christian ; Blanchard, Sebastien ; Henrist, Bernard ; Kölemeijer, Wilhelmus ; Libera, Bruno ; Lutkiewicz, Przemyslaw
Space constraints in several normal conducting magnets of the LHC required the development of a dedicated permanent heater for vacuum chamber bake-out. The new heater consists of stainless steel bands inside layers of polyimide. [...]

Aperture and Field Constraints for the Vacuum System in the LHC Injection Septa / Gyr, Marcel (CERN) ; Henrist, Bernard (CERN) ; Jiménez, J M (CERN) ; Lacroix, Jean Michel (CERN) ; Sgobba, Stefano (CERN)
Each beam arriving from the SPS has to pass through five injection septum magnets before being kicked onto the LHC orbit. The injection layout implies that the vacuum chambers for the two circulating beams pass through the septum magnet yokes at a flange distance from the chamber of the beam to be injected. [...]
