Flexible custom designs for CMS DAQ
/ Arcidiacono, Roberta (INFN, Turin ; Piemonte Orientale U., Novara) ; Bauer, Gerry (MIT) ; Boyer, Vincent (CERN) ; Brett, Angela Mary (Fermilab) ; Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Carboni, Andrea (INFN, Pisa) ; Ciganek, Marek (CERN) ; Cittolin, Sergio (Zurich, ETH) ; Erhan, Samim (UCLA) ; Gigi, Dominique (CERN) et al.
The CMS central DAQ system is built using commercial hardware (PCs and networking equipment), except for two components: the Front-end Readout Link (FRL) and the Fast Merger Module (FMM). The FRL interfaces the sub-detector specific front-end electronics to the central DAQ system in a uniform way. [...]

The CMS Online Cluster : IT for a Large Data Acquisition and Control Cluster
/ Gerry, Bauer (CERN) ; Beccati, Barbara (CERN) ; Behrens, Ulf (DESY) ; Biery, Kurt (Fermilab) ; Brett, Angela (Fermilab) ; Branson, James (UC, San Diego) ; Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Cheung, Harry (Fermilab) ; Ciganek, Marek (CERN) ; Cittolin, Sergio (CERN) et al.
The CMS online cluster consists of more than 2000 computers running about 10000 application instances. These applications implement the control of the experiment, the event building, the high level trigger, the online database and the control of the buffering and transferring of data to the Central Data Recording at CERN. Commissioning of the CMS High Level Trigger
/ Agostino, Lorenzo (Cornell U.) ; Bauer, Gerry (MIT) ; Beccati, Barbara (CERN) ; Behrens, Ulf (DESY) ; Berryhil, Jeffrey (Fermilab) ; Biery, Kurt (Fermilab) ; Bose, Tulika (Boston U.) ; Brett, Angela (Fermilab) ; Branson, James (UC, San Diego) ; Cano, Eric (CERN) et al.
The CMS experiment will collect data from the proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at a centre-of-mass energy up to 14 TeV. The CMS trigger system is designed to cope with unprecedented luminosities and LHC bunch-crossing rates up to 40 MHz. [...]

The CMS event builder and storage system
/ Bauer, Gerry (MIT) ; Beccati, Barbara (CERN) ; Behrens, Ulf (DESY) ; Biery, Kurt (Fermilab) ; Brett, Angela (Fermilab) ; Branson, James (UC, San Diego) ; Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Cheung, Harry (Fermilab) ; Ciganek, Marek (CERN) ; Cittolin, Sergio (CERN) et al.
The CMS event builder assembles events accepted by the first level trigger and makes them available to the high-level trigger. The event builder needs to handle a maximum input rate of 100\,kHz and an aggregated throughput of 100\,GB/s originating from approximately 500 sources. [...]

The CMS Barrel Calorimeter Response to Particle Beams from 2 to 350 GeV/c
/ CMS HCAL/ECAL Collaboration
The response of the CMS barrel calorimeter (electromagnetic plus hadronic) to hadrons, electrons and muons over a wide momentum range from 2 to 350 GeV/c has been measured. To our knowledge, this is the widest range of momenta in which any calorimeter system has been studied. [...]

Intercalibration of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at start-up
/ CMS ECAL Collaboration
Calibration of the relative response of the individual channels of the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector was accomplished before installation with cosmic ray muons and test beams. One fourth of the calorimeter was exposed to a beam of high energy electrons and the relative calibration of the channels, the intercalibration, was found to be reproducible to a precision of about 0.3\%. [...]
