Plasma accelerators present one of the most suitable candidates for the development of more compact particle acceleration technologies, yet they still lag behind radiofrequency (RF)-based devices when it comes to beam quality, control, stability and power efficiency. The Horizon 2020-funded project EuPRAXIA (“European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications”) aims to overcome the first three of these hurdles by developing a conceptual design for a first international user facility based on plasma acceleration. The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is producing a conceptual design report for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams accelerated using plasmas. EuPRAXIA will be set up as a distributed Open Innovation platform with two construction sites, one with a focus on beam-driven plasma acceleration (PWFA) and another site with a focus on laser-driven plasma acceleration (LWFA). The need of a fs-scale pulsed, high repetition rate, X-ray source for time-resolved fine analysis of matter (spectroscopy and photon scattering) in the linear response regime is addressed by the conceptual design of a facility called MariX (Multi-disciplinary Advanced Research Infrastructure for the generation and application of X-rays) outperforming current X-ray sources for the declared scope. MariX is based on the original design of a two-pass two-way superconducting linear electron accelerator, equipped with an arc compressor, to be operated in CW mode (1 MHz). [...]

Studies of a scheme for low emittance muon beam production from positrons on target / Collamati, Francesco (INFN, Rome) ; Antonelli, Mario (Frascati) ; Boscolo, Manuela (Frascati) ; Biagini, Marica (Frascati) ; Blanco-Garcia, Oscar (Frascati) ; Variola, Alessandro (Frascati) ; Bacci, Alberto (INFN, Milan) ; Liuzzo, Simone (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Raimondi, Pantaleo (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Chaikovska, Iryna (Orsay, LAL) et al.
A new scheme to produce muon beams characterised by very low emittance, in such a way to avoid the need for cooling, using a positron beam of about 45 GeV interacting on electrons on target is being studied by our group. This scheme is challenging and innovative, and needs a full design study to be developed. [...]

On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC\_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a $\sim$1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. This design study is performed in synergy with the EuPRAXIA design study. [...]
